Islam is the second most widely practiced religion in France, with the country being home to the largest Muslim population in Europe. Undoubtedly, France has faced various challenges in its attempt to achieve integration between its citizens and several issues have arisen during the last few decades. In order to comprehend the complexity of issues related to assimilation and integration, it is important to understand the different aspects of these issues and identify the reasons behind them to provide the fundamental basis needed to tackle them. In the article â€Å"France and Its Muslims†, published in the 2006 September/ October issue of the magazine Foreign Affairs, Senior Editor and freelance writer Stephanie Giry discussed the†¦show more content†¦Giry demonstrates the change in popular perception of these immigrants by highlighting, â€Å"In the 1960s and 1970s, immigrants had generally been thought of as workers. By the mid-1980s, they were considered Arabs. F rom there it was only a small step before they were seen as Muslims first and foremost† (2006, p. 91). Giry starts off the subject matter by claiming that violent attacks carried out by radical Islamists or â€Å"jihadists†, such as terrorist bombings of London’s subway or the murder of the Dutch filmmaker Theo von Gogh, have been taken as primary evidence that European immigration and integration policies have failed. She has rendered this diagnosis as flawed since it overlooks the fact that the majority of Muslims in Europe have nothing to do with radical Islamism and are struggling to fit in. Giry argues that French Muslims have displayed true capability and willingness to assimilate, much stronger than acknowledged by elite politicians and the media. However, the problem seems to be that French Muslims efforts towards integration have not been mutually met from the French public. She states that most Muslims have adopted the French cultural norms and provides examples of studies showing that France has one of the highest rates of intermarriage between Muslim women and French men in Europe (2006, p. 93), all supporting the fact that Muslims have succeeded in integrating in various ways.
