Operation Analysis w5 discussions - Essay Example Graphical solutions in linear programming have limited number of decision variables. The technique of LP plots constraints on graph paper and then identifies the feasible region that is represented by the constraints. The objective function is then drawn and used to identify optimal points in the feasible region. However, graphically, linear programming can only be done in one two variables. Thus, the maximum number of variables in LP model is two. However, it can be done in more than three variables using special algorithms. Business managers use linear programming models to come up with concrete and measurable performance improvements. The kind of decisions that are arrived at using LP models represent the optimal solutions or decisions that are possible with the given constraint variables at the disposal of managers. For instance, the optimal decision would be the maximum profit that a business can generate using available limited resources or the minimum costs that the business can incur to produce products in order to maintain its current maximum level of profits. Therefore, LP can help managers use available limited resources effectively, reduce costs, improve profitability, and reduce risks among other key benefits. Simplex method is a special algorithm that is computer based used to find optimal solutions to linear programming problems that contain thousands of constraint and decision variables. The simplex method uses iterative algorithm to find solutions to optimization problems. The method uses or provides data on slack variables, which represent unused resources and opportunity costs or shadow costs useful in sensitivity analysis. Therefore, simplex method is an effective and efficient method that overcomes the limitations of the linear programming model to find solutions to problems of optimization by ending at an optimal solution by jumping from

Earthquakes in GCC countries Essay Example for Free
Earthquakes in GCC countries Essay An Earthquake known also as tremor is resulted from a sudden release of energy ,which takes place in the earths crust, which then creates seismic waves. They are vibrations triggered by movement of rocks that have been strained (deformed) beyond their elastic limit. This activity called seismicity or seismism of an area refers to type , size and frequency over a time period. Earthquakes are measured using many instruments ( up to atleast 20 different types of measures) seismometers and the richter scale are most common and known, and ranges from 1. hich is the smallest to 9. 0, typically the highest possible value of any earthquake . They occur along faults, faults are fractures in the lithosphere caused by regions of rock rubbing against each other and become displaced. Earthquake terms: Seismic waves: These spread out towards all directions when the fault ruptures. Focus: The location from where the seismic waves are released. Epicenter: The point directly above the focus, on the earths surface. Earthquake damage depends on a number of factors such as: Distance from epicenter Magnitude of the earthquake Type of building construction (materials etc) Time of day Population around epicenter and other damages. Earthquakes forecasting Scientists have not been so successful in finding ways to make short term predictions as they seem to be very unpredictable however a lot of research and effort has been put into this in hope of finding a reliable system or device for short term earthquake environments scientists can make accounts of reasonable forecasts of where and how large an earthquake might be. In GCC: In the United Arab Emirates over the years a few minor earthquakes have taken lace, as assumed earlier this is no longer safe from this natural disaster. Especially with neighboring countries having major earthquakes such as Iran, which now has raised many questions as to if there is only a matter of time till when UAE faces one. GCC are now being monitored by several groups from United states of America and local groups also in the IJAE. Every year some earthquake tremors are felt due to the ones that have occurred in Iran and these vary in magnitude. Iran sits on multiple fault lines because of which the country faces earthquakes nearly everyday. n the 20th century itself, earthquakes have taken 126,000 lives according to the Encyclopedia Iranica. Sharjah residents of the Madam area situated on the Dubai-Fujairah road experienced a moderate intensity earthquake(3. 1)of Jus a few seconds, which sent panic waves across the residents forcing them to come out in the open when things stared moving inside their homes and business however no losses or deaths were resulted. This was a 1st time that the area noticed an earthquake generated locally. The last earthquake experienced by the region was on the 8th of May last year when 5. 5 magnitude earthquake hit the northern emirates 67 kms from Fujairah in the seas of the Gulf of Oman. Seismologists say, the UAE is located close to the Major Earthquake Zone and also has 3 local fault zones located at Wadi Ham,near Dibba, and between Bidyah and Jebel Sahal. Plates and Fault lines in the Region: A UAE based geologist suggests that Iran-style earthquakes are very unlikely to occur in the IJAE, because the tremore felt in the I-JAE are not caused by the same factors as those in Iran. Dr. Fowler suggested that in the area where maximum amount of aterial is being pushed aside, right at the edge of the plate is where most earthquakes occur, hence Iran. He also added that stresses become weaker and weaker the further they get from the egde,so Dubai is a much safer location where ther isnt any direct tectonic stress effects, ruling out the possibility of bigger earthquakes. Stresses are transmitted and that builds up to a bigger quake however before the build up there are lots of smaller quakes, there is no particular reason for the stresses to build up to a bigger quake though. Kuwaiti seismologist Dr. Faryal Bu Rabee has warned that a major earthquake is imminent in Iran which would have disastrous effects on the Gulf Arab states. He suggested that the epicenter would be in the Kerman area of South Iran, located north of the UAE. The last earthquake which magnitude earthquake on the 24th of November ,2005. Dr Fowler based her calculation on historic and scientific factors adding that the earthquake magnitudes could go up to 8 on the Richter scale. She also said that such earthquakes can result in a Tsunami which other scientists do not agree with, according to them a tsunami in he gulf is very unlikely because it is not deep enough. The Sea of oman which borders Iran opens into the larger n vast Arabian Sea where tsunamis have been recorded in the past. The last earthquake to rock the region was a 5. 9 February 08 quake, which was 10kms deep and located at about 250 kms frm Dubai Abu Dhabi. She also said any earthquake that occurs in the southern region of Iran frm the Zagros Mountains to the Makran Coast will have an effect on the Gulf Arab states. On Nov 28 1945, an 8. 1 magnitude quake had hit the Arabian Sea resulting in a tsunami that reached as far as Pakistan and India. Tsunami Hawaii-Based researcher George Pararas studied the Makran quake and tsunami, which caused 13metre waves of the Markan coast and 11 metre waves on the Gujrat India Coast killing 4000 people off the Makran coast. Fowler concluded by saying earthquake activity is not frequent in the country and it would definately take much longer to identify the trends on the Seismic activity in the region as compared to other regions that are more earthquake prone. However I-JAES close proximity to Iran which sits on multiple fault lines means that most the earthquakes felt there will also be felt in the IJAE.

The Power of Emotions in Shakespeares Othello Essay -- essays researc
Emotions have some control over our actions. However, there are other factors that influence what we do. In the play Othello though, emotions have way more power over the characters' actions. For example, the actions committed by characters consumed by love are greatly amplified. Another example of this is that the characters in the play that are consumed by jealousy go to far greater lengths than one normally would to quench their thirst for vengeance. The last instance that proves this is that the actions of characters overcome by despair are based solely on their hopelessness. These three points all help to show that in the play Othello, Shakespeare exaggerates how much our actions are affected by the major emotions of love, jealousy, and despair. As explained in the last paragraph, love is one of the major emotions in Othello. In the play, the actions committed by characters consumed by love are greatly amplified. Two characters that exemplify this are Othello and Desdemona. Throughout the first two acts, some of their actions are unrealistic for a couple in love. Take this quote, for example: ?Brabantio: Raise all my kindred! Are they married, think you? / Roderigo: Truly I think they are. / Brabantio: O heaven! How got she out? O treason of the blood!? (I:i:166-168). Othello and Desdemona are so consumed by love that they elope with no intention of telling anyone else, as evidenced by Brabantio?s reaction in the quote. They just acted according to their love without thinking of the effects of their elopement. Roderigo is also a prime example of how an emotion like love has near complete control of the characters? actions in the play. Roderigo is in love with Desdemona, and it seems that his actions are almost solely dri... ...our physician. (I:iii:305-309) After realizing how much Desdemona loved Othello, and how she didn?t love him, Roderigo became so despaired that he was prepared to commit suicide, but was talked out of it by Iago. This reaction by Roderigo is exaggerated by Shakespeare from the normal reaction of someone in the same situation. These points all show how the actions of characters consumed by despair or hopelessness were exaggerated in the play. As stated throughout the essay, Shakespeare exaggerates how much our actions are affected by major emotions in the play Othello. When consumed by love, the characters? actions are amplified, when consumed by jealousy, their actions become more extreme, and when consumed by despair, their actions are exaggerated. Although emotions do have some control over our actions, they aren?t the only factor that affects what we do.

Dental Dentistry isn't Just a profession; it's a way of life. Helping others is the best way to live, and that's exactly what you do. ââ¬Å"Blessed are those who hold lively conversations with the hopelessly mute, for they shall be called dentistsâ⬠(Ann Landers). We all dread our next go around at the dentist. Getting our teeth cleaned, drilled, pulled, and any other horrible exploit being done to our poor teeth. What our dentist is doing (besides invading our mouths), is protecting us from any diseases that could otentially form in our mouths.A dentist is ââ¬Å"one who is skilled, licensed and practice the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and malformations of the mouth. â⬠There are many factors into becoming a dentist. To become a dentist, one must attend dental school. The dental school must be accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA). In order to be accepted into any of the 56 (2006) dental schools in the United States, you must complet e two years of predental education. Most people geta bachelor's degree. In order to be accepted into dental school, you must first take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). In the first year of dental school students normally take science classes like microbiology, pathology, or anatomy. In the next years the advance to more dental-based classes; which includes going to laboratories and getting hands-on experience. Most dental students graduate from a dental D. M. D or a D. D. S in four years. A work day for a dentist varies every day. The field is often challenging due to the difference in people's mouths. You constantly have to build more knowledge due to the fact that each patient is different. Dentist's generally look over the patients records in the morning before their appointment. From there; they will practice what is necessary on the mouth of their patient. Whether it being drilling teeth, extracting teeth, removing decay and filling cavities, to prescribing medicine. Due to the ir flexibility; dentists get to choose whether they want to work full-time or half-time. Full-time dentists average about 63 patients a week.

The Flight essays
The Flight essays In his classic short story, "Flight," John Steinbeck uses many examples of symbolism to foreshadow the conclusion. Symbolism can be anything, a person, place or thing, used to portray something beyond itself. It is used to represent or foreshadow the ending of the story. Steinbeck uses colors, direction, and nature symbolism to help presage Pep's tragic death. Let us now more closely examine the ways that Steinbeck uses colors to foreshadow the ending of his short story. Perhaps the most repeatedly used symbol in "Flight," is the color black. In literature many authors use black to represent death. There are numerous examples in this short story. Some of these include the black handle on the long blade, Pep's black hair and the black jerky. Another example may be found when Pep puts on his fathers black coat, which represents death. When Pep puts on the coat he is literally covering himself with death. Another fine example is the trail in which Pep travels. Steinbeck describes the path as a well-worn black path. By traveling on this path he is in fact taking the road of death. Furthermore Pep's appearance also helps foreshadow the ending. Steinbeck describes him as having a black hat that covers his black thatched hair. Pep is also described as being dark, lean and tall. Another example is Pep's shack. The shack is described as weathered and very old. It casts a rather large shadow to the North east. The darkness of the shadow symbolizes death in th e home. As we can readily see, the authors use of black symbolism in the story tells us that the main character, Pep, is impending death. Another commonly used symbol in the story "Flight," is direction. Direction is used to represent positive or negative effects. North and East are generally "good" directions. Many people feel this came about when the early man saw the sun rise in the East. On the contrary, the d ...

Errors Made by the United States Citizen and Immigration Service When Processing Immigration Forms
Errors Made by the United States Citizen and Immigration Service When Processing Immigration Forms This case study takes place in the U.S. citizenship and immigration services office in Newark NJ. The agency is aware of a huge and noble task placed upon it by the government of the United States. The world has become a global village where information spreads fast and wide.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Errors Made by the United States Citizen and Immigration Service When Processing Immigration Forms specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The good prospects of the land of wonders have fuelled an increase in the number of people seeking visas, work permits, as well as citizenship. The biggest challenge the department is facing is the issue of asylum. The dire tor assures that the agency is aware of the international laws that oblige countries to allow people who have fled violence, persecution, and civil wars around the world to seek asylum in their territories.1 According to the deputy director of the USCIS, there are two types of immigrants to the United States the legal and illegal immigrants. Some legal migrants come to the country armed with Visas, but end up in expiration of their Visas and work permits disappearing in a big country. This group also includes foreign students, tourists, and business people. During an interview with the researcher, the deputy director of CIA said that illegal immigrants risked their lives travelling in boats in the high seas to enter through the shores of the United States. There are cases of immigrants. Others enter the country through the border of Canada and Mexico without informing the US officials (Goldman and Loughlin 6). The risks involved do not deter them from making efforts to reach the land of wonders. By the year 2011, the number of people seeking visas, work permits, and citizenship has shot up. This has intensified operations in the agency bearing in mind the backlog which already exists. The problem has been aggravated by an increase in th e number of illegal immigrants in the country. The director of the agency alludes that his officials are aware of the fact that there are two types of immigrants: states-legal and illegal ones. Once the officials are able to detect illegal immigrants, they face two options: either deport them back to their country of origin/ turn them back, or shelter them in the country as they await the screening process or the immigration court (The National Lawyers Guild 11-12). Those who are lucky to obtain working permits and permanent residency become the US citizens.Advertising Looking for case study on public administration? Let's see if we can help you! The director of the United States Citizen and Immigration Services admits that his office lacks adequate capacity to determine the ingenuity of applications made. According to Mr. Wellington, an official with the department, the officials are forced to make decisions without full information about the applicant. This definitely alters the ingenuity of the decision making. Therefore, the department is susceptible to committing errors which inconvenience the applicants. There have been instances when the department had cleared asylum seekers who were criminals in disguise. These people ended up in being a thorn in the flesh of the law enforcing agencies. One often wonders how such ineligible aliens enter the states despite being in place of a rigorous screening process. According to the deputy director of the agency, they lack the necessary measures to ensure the screening process is professional. The CIA director claims that most of the drug related cases and other serious crimes in the U.S. are committed by illegal immigrants who have passed under the hands of USCIS. His main concern is that these criminals passed through the screening process conducted by the USCIS. During last yearââ¬â¢s summer, Pati led a group of immigrants from Taiwan. The 12 plus group was fleeing from the communist regime in China which was becoming increasingly intolerant to the calls for the independent Taiwan. As the law in the U.S. stipulates, they made their application for asylum. They were ordered to appear before the USCIS officials for screening, which they did. Unfortunately, they were denied asylum despite their case being genuine. The director attributes such mistakes to lack of full capacity within the agency to effectively review applications made. Mistake of Incorrect Judgment of Legibility of Aliens As much as the director of the USCIS points out the progress that his agency has made in improving service delivery in the department, he admits that there is often a mistake in judging the legality of the immigrants. His officials often process the application with a mindset that all applicants are illegal asylum seekers.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Errors Made by the United States Citizen and Immigration Service When Processing Immigration Forms specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More They forget that there are genuine refugees with other applications being on work, student and visitor basis. Turning such people or subjecting to the long delays is not fair at all and may end up in spoiling the good image of the nation. Once the agency is able to pick illegal immigrants, it may allow them into the country and order them to appear in court at a later date. The deputy director of CIA Mr. Jones points out that this is a grave mistake, since these immigrants have got no official address; they end up in not appearing in the courts. The orders of removal are placed against the asylee in absentia. The aliensââ¬â¢ ends up in living in the country while dodging the authorities. This scenario became evident in the summer of 2009 when a 23 year old Jorge Garci a was declared an illegal immigrant by the USCIS and ordered to appear before the department. The director admits to have been in charge of the case. He says that during the trial, Jorge failed to appear in court. The authorities were informed that the young man had fled and his whereabouts was unknown to the authorities. The police were instructed to find and apprehend him. At one point, the director had almost forgotten the case of Jorge. One day, after many months, the director was having dinner with his family when some shocking news brought him back to the world of reality. A young drug dealer had apparently shot dead one police officer and wounded another when they tried to arrest him. What perturbed the directorââ¬â¢s mind was the picture of the suspected drug dealer. The image resembled that of a young Jorge. This disturbed the director who upon closer review of his files found that Jorge had criminal records. This case points the eminent errors committed by the USCIS off icials while reviewing the applications and in the handling of cases. This has been attributed to the challenge of inadequate finance which faced the department. Inadequate finance hinders the agency from conducting individualized hearings on the lawfulness and necessity for detention.Advertising Looking for case study on public administration? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Failure to fully investigate Cases When he was marrying Jean, a U.S. citizen, Farah, an Iranian, was aware of the immigration law which allows a foreign national who enters the United States of America with a valid visa to upgrade his or her status. His application for upgrade of citizenship status has been lying in the Nevada office for the last two years. The USCIS officials have disregarded the fact that Farah was eligible for citizenship. However, the immigration officials at times make erroneous mistakes by detaining or even deporting such persons without regarding the fact the person is now eligible for citizenship. According to Farah, he cannot understand why Hashim, a colleague from Iran received his citizenship. Hashim is a runaway criminal from Iran who after staying in the United States for the same period like Farah, got married to a U.S. citizen. Majority of these visitors mischievously get married to the U.S. citizens purely as an avenue of acquiring citizenship though naturalization. Farah is convinced that Hashim did not Marry Lopez out of love but as a way of acquiring citizenship and avoid deportation once his residency permit expires. Two years into the marriage and the couple is considering filing for a divorce due to the countless disagreements, which is obviously caused by negligence on the part of Hashim. The director of the agency claims that the agency fails to fully investigate such cases due to inadequate funds. Such immigrants are left to stay in the country. These people end up in competing with legal U.S. citizens with others turning against the state and becoming criminals. This mistake arises as a result of the agency not having a full budget to finance its operations, a common problem of many agencies in public administration. One of the immigration officials, Mrs. Brown, admits that they make erroneous judgment when handling the update of form 1-485. They take most of the cases as being similar to illegal marriages to the US c itizens in order to acquire the citizenship and avoid the US immigration law. Their problem is aggravated by lack of enough funds to fully investigate marriage based cases both within and without the United States. It is a common phenomenon to have the immigration judges refuse to order the deportation of certain immigrants due to the fact that they are married to the US citizens. Security Checkups Farah came to the United States to escape the Islamic regime in Iran which could not put up with his democratic ideologies. He was accompanied by a cousin whose application for asylum has been lying in the office for a long time. Every time they check with the office, they are infirmed that the application is waiting the security clearance from FBI. The two directors of the agencies have been trying to address this issue with minimal success. The long process causes back-logs and delay resulting in a lot of inconveniences to the applicants-financial and time costs. The agency lacks the ne cessary capability to produce reports that detail the status of the long pending name checks by the FBI (Ombudsman 41). In 2007, the director of the USCIS launched the E-Verify system. This is a tool for employers in the United States to determine the legality of their workforce. Some employers in pursuit of a cheap labor spur up illegal immigration by shipping in immigrants into the country. Despite the success of the system, there have been instances where errors in entry of data of a person result into a ban on grounds of illegality. The discrepancies are caused by the poor handling of the system by immigration officials. This is an error which causes a lot of inconveniences to many would be workers as the system declares them not fit legally to work in the United States. It is early June, and Mariano, the immigrant from Mexico, logs into the internet to check his employment status. He is seven months old in the U.S. and has been awarded a three year work permit. Upon entering hi s details into the system, he is baffled by the information that appears on the screen. He can not figure out how the system puts him in the category of people who are ineligible to work in the United States. There must have been an error when loading his details in the system. It is estimated that by the year 2007, there were more that 1.2 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. A majority of these people come from China, El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala and Philippines. Out of these, the agency is only able to handle about a hundred thousand applications per years, 18,784 of these are employment related. The agency has been accused by Amnesty International US chapter of gross violation of human rights in its quest to deport and arrest the unauthorized immigrants (GAO 6, 7). An official with Amnesty International accuses the agency of denying some detained immigrants, their right to challenge their detention in an independent court of law. They are held in custody wi thout a chance to access a judicial body or immigration judge (Amnesty International 8). Jabel is an Iranian who entered into the states with Farah. He was granted a work permit which expired in late 2010. The USCIS officials called and forcefully deported him. The officials did not heed to his pleas to allow him depart voluntarily at his own personal expenses (National Immigration Justice Centre 20). Voluntary departure would have favored Jabel as he would have been free to reenter the United States in the future without any bar of relief as opposed to the forceful deportation through a court order. Farah who is a lecturer at JF Kennedy School of Public Administration recalls the story of a colleague who sought for an update of citizenship status. To her surprise, twenty days after her naturalization through marriage to a US citizen, the data at USCIS database had not been updated. The personal file still read that she was in the United States on a work permit yet she was now a US citizen. This is despite the agency being mandate to update the status within two days of the naturalization process. According to the director of finance at USIC, the agency runs its operations in an independent way in terms of financing its operations. It relies on fees it charges to those people seeking services from it.2 The outcome of this move has been a shortage of funds for the agency. This happens despite the department that has got huge responsibilities, yet its financial base is not solvent enough to support these operations. For instance, in order to contain the problem of illegal immigrants, several measures need to be put in place by the agency. The director of the US coast Guards points out that the problem of illegal immigrants is compounded by the long United States border with neighboring countries such as Mexico, also the US shore line, another great route and entry point for slaves into the states. Without enough finance, the agency ends up not effectively handli ng the issue of illegal immigrants into the United States. More so, inadequate funds also hamper most of the USCIS daily operations. According to Mr. Miguel, agency has been experiencing back-log problems due to the large number of applications made. It is a humanitarian act to accord a person who is fleeing persecution a decent lifestyle, especially when in the detention camps. However, the department ends up not fulfilling this noble obligation due to inadequate finance (Homeland Security 44). Error in fee calculation The director of finance reveals that the agency uses a method of calculating fees formulated in the year 1997. The reliance on this 1997 model is an erroneous decision that has been made by the agency for a number of reasons. The old data have no relation whatsoever to the current processes and their related costs. This has been caused by the change in the processes over the years and the additional adjudication requirement after the 9/11(The National Lawyers Guild 1 1). According to the finance director, the fees received from the applicant did not reflect the agencyââ¬â¢s cost of operation. The lengthy processing of the applications often incurs more costs than what is received. Slow processing of application forms has been another let down in the agency The USCIS officials have over and over again being accused of creation a back log of applications made. There have been complaints where one has to wait for several weeks after filling their applications. The delay places a lot of serious challenges to applicants who might need the receipts in proving that they have complied with the relevant laws. It does not make sense why one pays for an application, yet it takes him/her weeks to get a mere receipt. An insight into the operations of the agency reveals sheer and intentional delays by the officials. The issue of delays also affects the green card applicants. There is a sad tale of delays in getting the Alien Identification and Telecommunic ation stamps arguably due to poor decisions made by some field officers. The field offices at times make these erroneous and unfair decisions of withholding the ADIT stamps despite them knowing the importance of the stamps to the aliens. The stamps are used by the aliens to travel and work in the United States as they wait for the processing of their green cards. Wrong Data Entry One issue that this study finds intriguing is the reason why there are numerous complains that reaches the office of the Ombudsman and the United States Citizen Immigration Service on publication errors in both the green cards and work permits. The obvious answer is error committed by the immigration officials when handling the applications. When Farah was collecting his form from the office, he found that the photograph of Jabel had been put in his form. (Homeland Security 44). This is a problem which, according to the director, is caused by the lack of keenness on the side of the officials responsible for the processing of the applications. Wrong wording in the Form I-102 Upon obtaining the correct I-94 card, Farah was unfortunate to lose it 9 months later in a robbery ordeal in Dallas. He was informed by a colleague in the university that he needed to fill Form I-102 This is a form used to replace a lost I-94 card and is used by the CBP at entry. However, the updated instructions on the form confused Farah as the instructions on it restrained an applicant from using the form to request an action on a form I-94 (USCIS 3). This has been brought about by erroneous wording in one of the sections of the form. Official in the office of immigration concede that there is an imminent error in the wording of form 1-94 which has brought confusion to people who are in need of using it. Delay in granting the Lawful Permanent Residence Status The law allows an asylee to seek for update his/her status to become a lawful permanent resident (National Justice Centre 58). This is done through an appl ication submitted to though form I-485 to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service. Poor decision making within the agency results in slow processing with some asylee having to wait for a long time to be granted this fundamental right. At times, the officials make mistakes in implementing the 1990 Immigration Act. This act allows USCIS to deny a request based on some reasons. For instance, improved conditions in refugee home country may compel the immigration officials to deny an application to extend asylum. An erroneous decision about improved political climate in a given country may put the life of an asylee at risk (United States Commission on International Religious Freedom 7). The agency lacks the necessary financial and capabilities to assess the political environment in a given state and is forced to rely on intelligence and media information which might not be satisfactory (National Immigrant Justice Centre 57). Rafael immigrated into the U.S. one year ago to e scape possible persecution by members of a deadly drug gang in his neighborhood. They claimed that he had information about their illegal operations and might report them to the police. Raphael was employed by Farah as a gardener in his residence. His stay in the states was a relief for him from the killer gang in his home country. He used to tell Rafael how he wished he would be allowed to stay in the US forever. However, error by the immigration officials cut short his stay in the U.S. claiming that the recent crackdown of drug barons and gangs in Mexico had made the atmosphere safe for Rafael to go back. Four days after Rafael was deported back to Mexico, he was killed by the gang. According to T USCIS, this is one of the many cases where the USCIS officials make wrong decisions about the safety of immigrants (16). In order to make the department effective, this report drew the following recommendations. The US Congress needs to enact laws to create a conjecture against the confi nement of immigrants and asylum seekers. The authorities should ensure that the department has enough finance to be able to offer individualized hearings on the lawfulness and necessity for detention. The officials should be trained to operate the E-Verify system to avoid discrepancies in data entered. The US government should commit itself to enhance the adoption of human rights in the detention facilities. This can be achieved through legislation or relevant policies implemented by the relevant agencies under the watchful eye of an independent oversight body. The policies should be geared towards protecting the rights of the immigrants without compromising the sovereignty and security of the United States. There should be relevant laws to protect the rights of the unaccompanied child immigrant (Bhabha 10). Despite the promise that there would be prompt issuance of green cards upon application, customers still complain on delays occurring. Where has then the USCIS gone wrong? Is it not logic for it to continue with the issuance of the Aliens Identification and Telecommunication stamps as the issues are being solved once and for all? Or when will the agency stop making the errors of commission and error of omission? It might be that the director of the USCIS or even the Ombudsman would be better placed to answer the question. Daniel Hale Williams, Heart Surgery Pioneer
Daniel Hale Williams, Heart Surgery Pioneer American physician Daniel Hale Williams (January 18, 1856- August 4, 1931), a pioneer in the field of medicine, was the first African American to perform successful open heart surgery. Dr. Williams also founded Chicagos Provident Hospital and co-founded the National Medical Association. Fast Facts: Dr. Daniel Hale Williams Full Name: Daniel Hale Williams, IIIBorn: January 18, 1856 in Hollidaysburg, PennsylvaniaDied: August 4, 1931 in Idlewild, MichiganParents: Daniel Hale Williams, II and Sarah Price WilliamsSpouse: Alice Johnson (m. 1898-1924)Education: M.D. from Chicago Medical College (now Northwestern University Medical School)Key Accomplishments: First African American to perform successful open heart surgery, founder of Provident Hospital (the firstà black owned and operated interracial hospital in the U.S.), and co-founder of the National Medical Association. Early Years Daniel Hale Williams, III, was born on January 18, 1856 to Daniel Hale and Sarah Price Williams in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. His father was a barber and the family, including Daniel and his six siblings, moved to Annapolis, Maryland, when Daniel was a young boy. Shortly after the move, his father died from tuberculosis and his mother moved the family to Baltimore, Maryland. Daniel became a shoemakers apprentice for a while and later moved to Wisconsin, where he became a barber. After graduating from high school, Daniel grew interested in medicine and served as an apprentice to a well known local surgeon, Dr. Henry Palmer. This apprenticeship lasted two years, and then Daniel was accepted to the Chicago Medical College, affiliated with Northwestern University. He graduated in 1883 with an M.D. degree. Career and Accomplishments Dr. Daniel Hale Williams began practicing medicine and surgery at Chicagos South Side Dispensary. He was also the first African American anatomy instructor at Chicago Medical College, where he taught notable future physicians such as Mayo Clinics co-founder Charles Mayo. By 1889, other notable appointments for Dr. Williams included the City Railway Company, the Protestant Orphan Asylum, and the Illinois State Board of Health. These were very unique accomplishments for the time, considering that there were very few black doctors at this point in African American history. Dr. Williams gained a reputation as a highly skilled surgeon whose practice included treatment for all patients, regardless of race. This was life-saving for African Americans at the time because they were not allowed admittance to hospitals. African American doctors were not allowed on staff in hospitals either. In 1890, a friend of Dr. Williams asked him for help as his sister was being denied entrance into nursing school because she was black. In 1891, Dr. Williams founded the Provident Hospital and Nursing Training School. This was the firstà black owned and operated interracial hospital in the U.S. and served as a training ground for nurses and African American doctors. First Open Heart Surgery In 1893, Dr. Williams gained notoriety for successfully treating a man, James Cornish, with stab wounds to the heart. Although physicians at the time were aware of the revolutionary works of Louis Pastuer and Joseph Lister in relation to germs and medical surgery, open heart surgery was generally avoided due to the high risk of infection and subsequent death. Williams had no access to X-rays, antibiotics, anesthetics, blood transfusions, or modern equipment. Employing Listers antiseptic technique, he performed the surgery suturing the pericardium (protective lining) of the heart. This would be the first successful heart surgery performed by an African American and second by an American doctor. In 1891, Henry C. Dalton had surgically repaired a pericardial wound of the heart on a patient in St. Louis. Later Years In 1894, Dr. Williams obtained the position of surgeon-in-chief at Freedmens Hospital in Washington, D.C. This hospital served the needs of the poor and newly freed slaves after the Civil War. In four years, Williams transformed the hospital, making dramatic improvements in the admission of surgical cases and drastically reducing the hospitals mortality rate. Dr. Daniel Hale Williams succeeded in the face of discrimination his entire life. In 1895, he co-founded the National Medical Association in response to the American Medical Associations denial of membership to blacks. The National Medical Association became the only national professional organization available for black physicians. In 1898, Williams resigned from Freedmens Hospital and married Alice Johnson, daughter of sculptor Moses Jacob Ezekiel. The newlyweds returned to Chicago, where Williams became chief of surgery at Provident Hospital. Death and Legacy After resigning from his position at Provident Hospital in 1912, Williams was appointed staff surgeon at St. Lukes Hospital in Chicago. Among his many honors, he was named the American College of Surgeons first black fellow. He remained at St. Lukes Hospital until suffering a stroke in 1926. Upon his retirement, Williams spent his remaining days in Idlewild, Michigan, where he died on August 4, 1931. Dr. Daniel Hale Williams would leave a legacy of greatness in the face of discrimination. He demonstrated that African Americans are no less intelligent or valuable than any other Americans. He saved many lives by establishing Provident Hospital and provided proficient medical care, and he also helped train a new generation of African American physicians and nurses. Should Military Recruiters be Allowed in High Schools Thesis
Should Military Recruiters be Allowed in High Schools - Thesis Example Students must be open to all kind of possibilities and military is one of them. Military recruitersââ¬â¢ presence at campus is to inform, educate, motivate and assist young students for an honorable, potentially lucrative and competitive career. According to Weekly Reader Corporation (2006) almost 100,000 teenagers joined United States military in 2004. Approximately 57 percent of all army, Marine, Navy and Air Force recruits are between 17 to 19 years of age. These statistics points towards influence military recruiters have on high school students when it comes to deciding about volunteering for army. According to a clause of No Child Left behind Act 2002, military recruiters are allowed to visit high schools twice a year and schools must provide studentsââ¬â¢ contact information with recruiters. Military recruiters should be allowed in high schools due to the fact that not only military entirely depend on recruiters to enroll educated and young people to defend the country but also the young students should be aware of all options for making informed and beneficial career decision in uncertain economic conditions and increasing competitiveness for higher education. Military recruiters should be allowed in high schools because army and our defense system depend on the contributions of these young people. According to U.S. Recruiting Command, since the abolition of draft in 1973, United States has an all-volunteer military. It implies that army is completely dependent on recruiters for recruiting well-educated, properly trained and sophisticated people to defend us on war fronts and save our sovereignty (S. Douglas Smith as cited in Herbert, 2006) Parents and students must not feel forced to join military. It is a fact that every employer search for the best to serve and military is no exception. By visiting high school campus, military recruiters not only serve the nation as a whole but also broaden the horizon for teenagers. Their
Media in the Providing Wartime Coverage Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Media in the Providing Wartime Coverage - Essay Example For peace to exist among all nations, ideas and information should be freely disseminated both within frontiers and across them. This is because a free and independent media is essentially the lifeblood of well-founded, working societies, and a lifeline to progress itself (Shaw, 1996). In nations where censorship has been found to be imposed, both democracy and development have been big losers. It is also a known fact that most of the reporters who have died in the line of duty around the world have been mostly murdered for reasons such as revealing corruption or abuses of power, opposing entrenched interests, legal or illegal or simply for doing their jobs. Many hundreds more have faced harassment, intimidation and physical assault, with such acts resulting in chilling effects on society at large thereby stifling dissent and debate (Shaw, 1996). Such attacks must not be tolerated at all cost and as such legal mechanisms should be put in place to protect reporters. Journalistic work constantly involves difficult options, but wartime reporting raises the level of intensity, consequently forcing reporters to face myriad issues including separating objectivity from propaganda; uncertainty from prejudice and the need to convey the impact of conflict, particularly on civilians, without displaying images of death and suffering, which are insults to human dignity (Shaw, 1996). The issue of selectivity usually poses the biggest challenge in that some issues and situations attract undivided coverage, while others of seemingly equal importance fail to achieve matched attention. The problem of hate media is another outstanding outcome of reporting during wartime. A good example in real time is found in Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the world witnessed genocide and crimes against humanity, triggered, in part, by nationalistic and ethnocentric hate campaign, propagated through the mass media. In the same vein, many media outlets in Cte d'Ivoire and South Africa have in recent times used xenophobic messages through political manipulation, unsubstantiated claims, and incitement to violence against individuals and groups, especially of specific foreign origin, all emphasizing how misuse of information can have deadly consequences (Shaw, 1996). Finally, the media can do more than anything in wartime to help the world learn not only how a war is conducted, but also how it is affecting people. During this period, reporters can give voice to those who would otherwise remain unheard and also tell stories that otherwise would remain untold. Through this way therefore, reporters can create conduits between those trapped in a conflict zone and those outside it. Moreover, in times of conflicts and war, the presence of reporters can help prevent atrocities. This is simply because the reporters can effectively sense a conflict ahead and alert the world to the need for preventive measures to avoid tragedy (Shaw, 1996). The Supreme Court is crucial in deciding what issues are discussed and those that are classified. Foremost is any issue relating to the needless invasion of personal privacy. If a privacy interest exists, for instance, it should be weighed against the public

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and the doctor assuming the role of God Essay
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and the doctor assuming the role of God - Essay Example ââ¬Å"A new species would bless me as their creator and source: many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me. No father could claim the gratitude of his child so completely as I should deserve theirs.â⬠(Shelley, 58) Therefore, it is evident that there is an insatiable urge in Victor Frankenstein to assume the role of God and he is often criticized for crossing ethical and moral boundaries with the aim of achieving this goal. An understanding of his experiences with the monster in the novel confirms that his choice is executed with ill-intentions and questionable for ethical motives. This paper makes a reflective exploration of the idea that Victor was wrong in assuming the role of God. Assuming the role of God for the purpose of creating life is wrong, and such an endeavor led to the detriment of Dr. Frankenstein in Mary Shelleyââ¬â¢s Frankenstein. A profound analysis of the theme of assuming the role of God in Mary Shelleyââ¬â¢s Frankenstein confirms tha t the major character, Dr. Frankenstein, has been highly obsessed the lure of creating life from his early childhood onwards. At his young age, Victor was fascinated by the wonders life offered him and he wanted to learn about all of them and he dedicated his time to exploring the realms of these wonders through the study of alchemy, chemistry, philosophy and human anatomy. As a youngster, Victor was obsessed with the power of knowledge and wished to find out the secrets of nature and its powers. ââ¬Å"The most learned philosopher knew little more. He had partially unveiled the face of Nature, but her immortal lineaments were still a wonder and a mysteryâ⬠¦ I had gazed upon the fortifications and impediments that seemed to keep human beings from entering the citadel of nature, and rashly and ignorantly I had repined.â⬠(47) Significantly, his obsession for knowledge led Victor to make a life-altering decision ââ¬â the decision to create an animate being. After several years of labor ââ¬â intensive work ââ¬â stitching together different pieces of flesh into one being ââ¬â Victor finally completed his task and created life. The outcome, however, was not the wonderful being he had hoped for, but rather a monstrous atrocity. He had created a fearsome and inhuman creature; he created a monster. Thus, Harold Bloom presents ââ¬Å"Victor Frankenstein, in his act of creation, as being momentarily a moral idiot, like so many who have done his work after himâ⬠¦ When the ââ¬Ëdull yellow eyeââ¬â¢ of his creature opens, this creator falls from the autonomy of a supreme artificer to the terror of a child of earthâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Bloom, 6) Therefore, it is fundamental to maintain that Victorââ¬â¢s attempt to assume the role of God by creating a monster resulted in his ultimate detriment and tragedy in life. One of the essential factors about the character of Victor in the novel is that he is presented as a counterfeit of God and as a Fau stian figure, rather than a Promethean one. Significantly, the intention of the protagonist in assuming the role of God in Mary Shelleyââ¬â¢s Frankenstein has not been one of serving the welfare of humanity, but rather to serve his egoistic motive of acquiring power and respect of his creation. In fact, the most fundamental irony of the novel Frankenstein: Or,
Factors in Asian Urban Growth Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Factors in Asian Urban Growth - Essay Example In relation to population and size, Asia is the worldââ¬â¢s largest and most populous continent. Its gross domestic product is the third highest in the world. With the rise of globalization, world economies had structural adjustments which influenced production, resource utilization and wealth creation (Clark, 2003). Asian economies experienced high development in the manufacturing industry supplemented by the availability of cheap labor. According to Keiner, Schretzenmayr and Schmid (2005), urbanization in Asia has occurred at some of the fastest rates in history with a rise in large urban agglomerates. The urban growth is expected to increase more as time goes by, especially within the least developed, low income economies in Asia. This fast rate of urban growth in Asia has been linked with the population dynamics, economic markets and socio-political conditions of the region. Population growth has always been a factor in economic development. The Malthusian theory on population is that a high population can lead to a crash in the economy by leading it to acute poverty while trying to sustain the populationââ¬â¢s needs. There are better views to population in that a large population means the availability of a large labour force and domestic market. An increase in population also encourages technological advancement and innovation in a bid to meet the rising need for certain goods and services according to Clark (2003). Asian population levels have been high over time even before this burst of urbanization. The population has a big role in the urbanization and development since they occupy the urban cities and engage in economic activities that sustain the rise of urban centers. Likewise the socio -political environment is also important to the urban growth. Success in economic development depends greatly on the political and administrative officials. These government officials also influence infrastructural development in the urban centers and rural ar eas of a country. Asia is a politically, economically socially and culturally diverse region. With globalization, countries in the region have been able to integrate especially to facilitate trade and economic activities. The rate of infrastructure growth in many Asian cities has been inevitable given the rising population. Roads, hospitals, schools and housing facilities in the urban centers had to be expanded in order to accommodate this population. The other factor related to urbanization is the economic markets. Compared to the other two factors the effects of the economy in the development of cities are more pronounced. Most Asian economic markets are characterized by free trade, booming capital markets, reduced regulations economic freedom, and security of property rights. In addition to this, economic integration in the region and with other economies of the world has led to a further increase in economic activity in the region (Landau, 2001). Economic integration led to conn ectivity among cities in the Asian region in order to facilitate the flow of goods and services, people, investments and communication between them. Free trade in the area has been encouraged by the formation of trade blocs. They include Asian pacific cooperation (APEC), whose aim is to promote free trade and economic cooperation the Asia pacific region. The Asia- Europe meeting (ASEM) works towards security of economy by deepening relations between Asia and Europe at all levels. The major trade bloc in the are which is the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) has its main objectives to have a free trade area , with common external preferential tariff

Rhetorical analysis about the westboro church. the link to the article Essay
Rhetorical analysis about the westboro church. the link to the article is on the intructions - Essay Example Among the many freedoms that the American people enjoy, the freedom of speech was the first amendment made to the American constitution and was included in the bill of rights. It is the most fundamental freedom and given priority by the founding fathers to define the American spirit. However, expression of this right is dependent on the individual and the topic under discussion. Sensitive topics attract a lot of debate from different parties who may be in favour or against the ideas that one expresses. Moreover, it is necessary to realise that the universe is not homogenous in its views and, it is through this that the world grows (Werhan, 8). The expression of this freedom can lead to overexploitation, which is punishable by law in cases where the law refers to it as hate speech. In such cases, it leads to issuance of verdicts when expression of this freedom causes emotional or physical damage when directed to parties who may not be the right receivers of the blame or the doers of such an act. However, radical means have to be within the limits of the constitution if they are to be used to express freedom of speech. This will attract no punishment because this freedom is enshrined in the American constitution. This calls for consideration of the extent to which individuals can exercise their freedom of speech because of the many fatalities that have resulted due unnecessary blames and pressures exerted on an individual who is purported to go against moral standards. This piece of writing is addressed to learned individuals in the American society because this writer applies impartiality in addressing the freedom of expression. This is because the writer does not give limitations on exercise of their freedom of speech. He only exposes all sides of this freedom and gives the reader an opportunity to decide their stance. The general American population does not have adequate knowledge about the bill of rights.
General Ability Test Essay Example for Free
General Ability Test Essay Once your boat does sail off and your business does come into being chances are that you will need people to help you run it. Now, recruitment might look easy but donââ¬â¢t be fooled by its innocent exterior it can turn out to be the devilââ¬â¢s own at times. If you are in a hurry to pursue success you are likely to take under your wings almost anyone who is willing to give you a hand in doing just that. But while large scale recruitment is a good thing filtering out the excess over time and keeping back the cream is the only way to run a good business. Now, lets suppose that you have taken into your firm almost everyone who applied for the jobs you offered without even bothering about their score in the entry-level assessment. Its quite alright to have extra recruits such as these for a while but remember, sooner or later you will have to select the best out of this bunch and let the others go. While selecting the best out of the lot might sound simple but the job itself is far from being easy. (Lamb, 2004) Often good scores at a test reveal little or nothing about the potential of your future employees so donââ¬â¢t let your judgment get clouded by their entry test results alone. Instead, keep a tab on their regular office work. Usually the brightest amongst a group of recruits shine out during discussions and meetings and general performance. Find out who the right candidates from your large number of recruits simply by profiling the sort of candidate you are ideally looking for your particular purpose. A certain candidate might be as smart as a pin but he/she might not fit into your company or the specific post you are looking to fill. Remember to stay focused on your precise needs in order to find yourself the right employees. Post ââ¬ârecruitment evaluation is often easier than pre-recruitment selection since it allows you a first hand experience of exactly what your potential worker is capable of. Enterobacteria. Pseudomonas species. A = Streptococcus pyogenes. To further confirm that sample A is Streptococcus pyogenes you can undergo a PYR test. The PYR test is a rapid colorimetric method which tests for the presence of the enzyme pyrrolidonyl aminopeptidase present in the microorganism. The enzyme hydrolyses L-pyrrolidonyl-ÃŽà ²-naphthylamide (PYR) to ÃŽà ²-naphthylamide, which produces a red colour when a cinnamaldehyde reagent is added. Paper strips are used to perform the test. A positive result for this test shows the typical morphology of S. pyogenes (Ferretti et al, 2016). Streptococcus pyogenes can also be tested by bacitracin test due to their sensitivity towards it. The test is used because other streptococci is resistant to bacitracin. A bacitracin test is undergone by making a subculture of the S. pyogenes on sheep blood agar. The bacterial strain S. pyogenes being tested is streaked with individual colonies of a culture which is pure from an SBA agar plate and a disk containing 0.04 units of bacitracin is put onto the SBA plate. Incubation overnight at a temperature of 35à °C in CO2 (5%) then occurs. A zone of inhibition surrounding the disc indicates the susceptibility of the strain (Ferretti et al, 2016). B = Staphylococcus aureus. To further confirm that sample B is Staphylococcus aureus the thermostable DNase test can be used. The thermostable DNAse test is performed using the agar diffusion method. 2ml aliquot of broth of the blood culture is boiled for a duration of 15 minutes and then allowed to cool to room temperature. Holes of six-millimetres are cut in toluidine blue DNase agar plates. 100à µl of the boiled culture broth is placed into the well and then incubated at 37oC. Tests are read during 2 and 4 hours. The PPVs and NPVs for the culture is calculated as well as sensitivities and specificities. A result of 100% sensitivity means S. aureus is present (Lagace-Wiens et al, 2007). To distinguish whether the strain is MSSA or MRSA a cefoxitin test is carried out. Susceptibility to cefoxitin is determined by the diffusion disc method on Mueller-Hinton agar plates. A suspension of the organisms is adjusted to 0.5x MacFarland standard, diluted to 1:100 and inoculated onto the Mueller-Hinton agar by streaking the agar surface all over. 30-à µg cefoxitin disks are applied and the plates are incubated at 37oC for 24 hours. An isolate is an MRSA strain if the cefoxitin inhibition zone diameter is less than or equal to 21 mm (Boutiba-Ben Boubaker et al, 2004). C= Enterobacteria. To further confirm what enterobacteria sample c is, further tests need to be undertaken. To see if sample c is a type of Escherichia bacteria use the lipase test. The test sees if the bacteria uses corn oil as a source of carbon and energy for growth. The result will be negative (if Escherichia) because the colour will be unchanged as no lipase is present (Vumicro.com, n.d.-b). To see if the sample is a Yersinia bacteria the lysine decarboxylase test can be used. The test sees if the bacteria can use lysine as a source of carbon and energy for growth. The result will be negative (if Yersinia) because of lack of colour change to yellow at 24 hours and back to purple at 48 hours (Vumicro.com, n.d.-c). To see if the sample is a Salmonella bacteria use the maltose test. The result will be negative (if Salmonella) due to magenta or hot pink in colour (Vumicro.com, n.d.-a). The citrate test needs to be undertaken to see if the sample is a Shigella bacteria. The test is a test used to assess the ability of the bacteria to utilize sodium citrate and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate. If the sample is a Shigella bacteria then the result for this test will be negative as there will be no colour change as the colour will stay deep forest green (Acharya, 2013). D = Pseudomonas species. To further confirm that sample D is Pseudomonas species a methyl red test can be used. The methyl red test is a test which detects the production of sufficient acid when glucose is fermented and the conditions are maintained such that the pH of the previous culture is kept below the value of 4.5, which is shown by the colour change of the methyl red indicator which is added when the period of incubation finishes. The result of this test for Pseudomonas species is negative because there is no change in colour when methyl red is added. The colour stays yellow (Online Microbiology Notes, 2014a). Another test that can be used is the voges-proskauer (VP) test. The test is a test used to see whether the pathogen produces acetylmethyl carbinol from glucose fermentation. If acteylmethyl carbinol is present it is converted to diacetyl in the presence of ÃŽà ±-naphthol, strong alkali and oxygen. Diacetyl found in the peptones in the broth is then condensed to form a pinkish red polymer. The result of this test for Pseudomonas species is negative because acetylmethyl carbinol is not present in Pseudomonas species (Online Microbiology Notes, 2014b). Infectious episode of Streptococcus pyogenes and treatment Streptococcus pyogenes is one of the most important pathogens that cause skin and soft-tissue infections and is also associated with septicaemia and other severe complications (Segal et al, 2005). An example of a disease caused by Streptococcus pyogenes is scarlet fever. Scarlet fever is a contagious bacterial infection which affects children between 5 and 18 years old. It is spread by contact of droplets from the cough and sneezes of an infected person. Fever and sore throat is the first stage of illness. There also may be chills, vomiting and abdominal pain. The tongue is swollen and has a whitish coating. Throat and tonsils become very red and sore, and swallowing becomes incredibly painful. After one or two days of the illness, a rash appears which is red in colour. Strep bacteria of the strain produce a toxin (poison) that causes people to break out in the rash. The rash appears first on the neck, underarm, and groin, which then spreads throughout the body. The rashes are small, flat red blotches that gradually change into fine bumps and feel like sandpaper. The cheeks have a flushed appearance, but there may also be a pale area around the mouth. Around the underarm, elbow, and groin the skin creases are brighter than the rest of the rash. These rashes are termed pastias lines. Complications of kidney damage, hepatitis, vasculitis, septicaemia, congestive heart failure and death may occur (Davis, n.d.). Scarlet fever can be treated with antibiotics. A strep test is needed. The test involves swabbing the throat to confirm whether group A streptococcus is creating the illness. If it is positive, prescription of antibiotics is needed. Antibiotics allows scarlet fever patients recover sooner and protect people from catching the disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). Infectious episode of Staphylococcus aureus and treatment Staphylococcus aureus can cause endocarditis. Endocarditis occurs when the bacteria adheres to the cardiac valve. Bacteria can colonize the vegetation composed of fibrin and platelets (Keynan and Rubinstein, 2013). S. aureus enters the bloodstream due to healthcare procedures because of the dentogen pathway or drug use. Bacteria adhere extremely fast usually within minutes to an injured valve surface via deposition on platelet fibrin. It also adheres to inflamed valve surface. S. aureus enters via an intracellular route to the valve endothelium which contributes to inflammation and aggressive tissue destruction by the bacteria. The increase of bacteria on and in the endothelium leads to maturation of vegetation on the valve. Spreading of pathogens occurs from embolization of vegetation particles. This leads to complications such as stroke, haemorrhage, meningitis or reaction to the meningeal, brain abscess, and mycotic aneurysm (Werdan et al, 2013). There are many impacts of endocard itis which are physical and emotional. In the acute phase, unpleasant symptoms can be experienced which include high temperature, chills, loss of appetite, headache, muscle and joint pain, night sweats, shortness of breath and persistent coughs. People who suffer from endocarditis experience complications of blood supply to the brain which is affected. Worry and anxiety can occur which creates symptoms such as a racing heart, increased breathing rate, a dry mouth, sweating, tingling and feeling dizzy. Low mood and depression also occurs because of endocarditis. When patients feel unwell and are being stuck in a hospital they can become sad. Feeling of hopelessness about the future and lacking in energy and drive can also occur. Struggling to enjoy the things you used to enjoy and feeling bad about yourself or criticised by others along with not being able to sleep or eat well occurs as well (Coping after Endocarditis, n.d.). Endocarditis is treated with a course of antibiotics or su rgery (Nhs.uk, 2016). Infectious episode of Enterobacteria and treatment Enterobacteria such as E. coli can cause gastroenteritis. E. coli enters the gastrointestinal tract and attaches to the lining of the intestinal mucosa where it secretes enterotoxins. Invasion of the intestinal mucosa does not occur. Toxins produced by the bacteria affect absorptions of nutrients and causes the cells of the intestinal mucosa to secrete electrolytes and water. Evidence of this will be in the form of profuse watery diarrhoea including vomiting which starts in 12 to 48 hours after ingestion. Other E. coli strains invade the cells of the mucosa and cause stress ulcers and bleeding. This creates inflammatory diarrhoea commonly associated with diarrhoea which sometimes can be bloody and there is a huge amount of abdominal pain. Toxins which E. coli produce present in foods causes secretory diarrhoea which is profuse and watery with nausea and vomiting that is very prominent. It is fast acting and symptoms may be evident in less than 12 hours after ingesting contaminated fo od. In some cases, the symptoms may be present in 1 to 6 hours. Patients with gastroenteritis have an increased risk for aortic aneurysm and ulcerative colitis (Ternhag et al, 2008). Treatments for gastroenteritis include antibiotics. Not every case of the disease needs antibiotics. Majority of cases of gastroenteritis are self-limiting and resolve in days. If the E. coli strain is associated with stool culture and persisting symptoms, then antibiotic treatment is needed. Patients which are immunocompromised also need antibiotics. Antidiarrheal agents can also be used to treat gastroenteritis. Antidiarrheal agents are used when symptoms are persisting even when antibiotics have been taken. The use of the agent is dependent on a case by case and needs to be consulted with a medical doctor before using an antidiarrheal agent. If a persistent diarrhoea is present then probiotics may also be needed (Chris, n.d.). Infectious episode of Pseudomonas species Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the type specie for Pseudomonas which can cause bronchopneumonia. It is an inflammation of the lungs characterized by foci of consolidation surrounded by normal parenchyma. Bronchopneumonia affects one or more lobes, being frequently bilateral and basal (Pathologyatlas.ro, 2014). When a person suffers from bronchopneumonia the lung parenchyma is attacked by the bacteria. An immune inflammatory response is triggered in response to this. Because of this, the alveolar sacs fill with exudate. Consolidation then occurs when the air space is replaced by the exudate (fluid). Also there are multiple areas which is isolated of consolidation, affecting various pulmonary lobes (Hellomrdoctor.com, 2016). Lobular bronchopneumonia can lead to lobar pneumonia. Exudate starts to build up in the basal lobes. The affectation from this disease is bilateral. The lesions diameter vary between 2 and 4 cm and the lesions turn yellow or grey in colour, is dry and centred on a bronc hiole. As well as this, their delimitation is not clear and the lesions become united. Suppurative exudate gathers due to inflammation in the bronchioles. As more bronchioles suffer inflammation, the congestion experienced by the patient becomes more extensive. Between the areas of consolidation, the parenchyma remains normal and aerated (Hellomrdoctor.com, 2016). The effect of bronchopneumonia includes coughing and fever which makes breathing become difficult. If it is not treated mortality can be as high as 40%. If bronchopneumonia becomes severe the outer lining of the lungs and the inner lining of the chest becomes inflamed making breathing even more painful (Quinn, n.d.). If a person has bacterial bronchopneumonia antibiotics are prescribed. Antibiotics will destroy the bacteria causing the infection. Most people feel better within one to three days after starting antibiotics. Fever reducer or cough medication for bronchopneumonia may also be prescribed. These medications can h elp relieve symptoms, but does not cure the patient (Martel, 2015). Bibliography Acharya, T. (2013). Ah, Woe Is Me :: essays research papers
Ah, Woe Is Me A) Summary of The Story: In the beginning of this short story we are introduced to Sarah, an aging black servant living in South Africa. She works hard for an upper-class white family and spends all of her money on education for her three children who are sent to a boarding school. They come home once a year at Christmas, and the first time the narrator meets the children, she is surprised at their well-mannered behaviour. She finds, however, that Sarah is a bit harsh towards them, and she comments on this. Sarah tells her that it is better to learn the lesson now and grow to accept one's fate later. In the course of the following year, Sarah must give up her job because of her legs, and one day her daughter comes to the house. Slowly she tells her story to the narrator. How the younger brother is working now, and how she is taking care of Sarah. The narrator offers her some clothes and some money and invites her inside for a cup of tea. When she is about to leave, she starts crying and can only mutter that her mother is very ill. Unsure of what to do, the narrator hands her a handkerchief. B) An Essay About the Text: The setting in this story is South Africa in the 1950's. Apartheid and segregation are words that describe the conditions under which the blacks (the native Africans) live perfectly. The blacks nearly have no rights and must accept being oppressed by the whites. Sarah is only one of many poor blacks who only just manages to earn a living by working as a servant for a rich white family (the narrator). Slavery does not exist anymore, but it can be difficult to distuingish the life of a slave from that of a native African in the 50's except from the fact that they do after all get paid for their work. Sarah is very concerned about her children getting a good education. She probably wants them to have a better life than she has had so far, and while that is a very noble thought, the facts speak against it. Her children do not at this time have a very good (if any) chance of getting a good solid education because it is very expensive, and their mother does not make that much money. Even if she did make enough money, her legs are bad, and at the end of the story, she has to give up her job (and thus take her children out of the boarding

Active Versus Passive Mind Debate Essay
Ãâ°tienne Bonnot de Condillac an 18th-century French philosopher contended that the senses are the foundation for all ideas and other functions carried out in the mind. Another prominent French philosopher, Renà © Descartes supported the Rationalistic theory; an explanation of behavior based on logic that has nothing to do with the senses. Condillacââ¬â¢s Sensationalism premise and Descartes theory of Rationalism serve as fuel for the classic active versus passive mind debate. The passive mind theory suggests that all learning occurs through the experience of sensations, in the absence of voluntary mind control processes, while the active mind theory claims the exact opposite; that individuals actively focus certain mental processes on the subject matter and the senses play no part in the process. Descartes also believed that sensory data was inclined to be false and was therefore useless, suggesting that mathematical deduction was the only path to the truth. Justin Skirry 2008 I believe that both theories have some validity. The problem arises for me with the use of the word all by Condillac, and the use of the word only by Descartes, which is what takes the theories from the moderate part of the continuum to the extreme. Sensory learning is of course a proven fact, but it is also a fact that active learning occurs as well. It is not unusual for a philosopher to be both a sensationalist and a rationalist at the same time. I tend to trust my deductive powers of reasoning more than my senses, because many outside forces can alter the senses. Take emotion for instance, I am aware of the role unchecked emotions can play in faulty decision-making. I have learned not to make important decisions when I am in a highly emotional state.

My Ambition to Become a Aeronautical Engineer
Aimless life is no lesser than a sin . Many people have no definite aim in life. They are like travellers going ahead without any destination. Someone has truly said that ââ¬Å"Changes do not happen when circumstances improve it happens when we decide to change to ourselves . ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢Such people who lead an aimless life do not believe in hard work but, always depend on destiny. It is true that God has written our destiny but it is we who have to achieve it through hardwork. It is you, if you do not work efficiently you wonââ¬â¢t achieve the best results of it. A person who has his goals set will never astray. He wonââ¬â¢t be mislead by other temptations. Heââ¬â¢ll be the master of his luck. He does not believe in destiny. He loves his work and heââ¬â¢ll be efficient towards it, and his energies wonââ¬â¢t go waste. His health does not fail him. But, for people who have aimless lives wonââ¬â¢t change his mood to change his track. If you have an ambition, you c an pursue it all your life and you are never tired. It drives you on and on quite tirelessly. It is necessary to decide in life that what you aspire to become. An engineer, a doctor, lawyer, scientist, philosopher or anything different from it. The whole world is open before a young man and he should make up his mind about his career/profession as soon as possible. Most of the people work to achieve money and fame, but why do people forget that they need to serve their country first. They need to pay their motherland.People should love their work. For them work should be their life. It is true that in this present world money is necessary but too much will pave a wrong path for you. That is why, I strongly desire to become an I. A. S. officer [Indian Administrative Service]. I want to thank my motherland first to give me such a beautiful land to live. I want to serve her upon my best. I know that an I. A. S. officer does not receive that amount of money to have luxurious lives. But I envisage that someone has truly said that ââ¬Å"If your whole day has been good, then you are on the wrong pathâ⬠. This means that if you have all the luxuries of life you will lose your simplicity and I being an officer want people to inspire from what I become. ââ¬Å"Hate the sin, but not the sinnerâ⬠. Do not ignore people who donââ¬â¢t be efficient towards their work, hate their habit. Atlast, I would only say that put up aims in your life at an early age, youââ¬â¢ll never astray and seek your aims with wonders and happiness of life.
Humour and Leadership
Leaders in todayââ¬â¢s cut throat world of corporate industry face an enormous challenge. In the midst of achieving the organisationââ¬â¢s goals and pursuing profits, how do leaders build teamwork, motivate their subordinates, convey their sometimes demanding managerial concerns and reduce stress in a way that produces positivity and productivity? Is it possible to be serious at work without actually being serious at work? To answer this question, this essay will look at research surrounding leadership characteristics and investigate how humour can practically have an impact on leadership effectiveness. How do we define humour? Humour is a verbal or nonverbal activity eliciting a positive cognitive or affective response from listeners and must be connected to context in order to be truly funny. The definition includes puns, jokes, stories, anecdotes, physical actions etc (Meyer, 1990). According to Sarros and Barker (2003), humour is the ability to invoke laughter or see the funny side of a painful predicament. In their study of Australian managers, Sarros and Barker (2003) established that the character attribute of humour was rated the second highest behind integrity. Humour may seem an unlikely component for a leader, however Barker and Coy (2003) also recognised the importance of humour. They identified seven virtues by which Australian executives could be identified and humour was included. Eckert and Vehar (2000) state: ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s possible to do serious work without being serious. In fact, itââ¬â¢s actually counterproductive to do it any other way. Research on environments that foster innovation shows that playfulness and humour are critically supportive elements. We can be serious about what weââ¬â¢re doing without taking ourselves seriously, and we must. With humour in the workplace being established as a component for effective leadership, the way in which it is used needs to be looked at. According to Anderson (2011), humour is best when it is used deliberately, and advises it to be planned but flow naturally according to oneââ¬â¢s personality. There are many opportunities for humor to be used. While the telling of a joke is a good starting point, humour that uplifts is much more positive and this can occur during speeches, within memos or even at the conclusion of an email (Avolia et al 1999). There are many benefits as to why a leader would use humour in the workplace. According to Davis and Kleiner (1989), humour has the potential to achieve three outcomes, these are, 1. Stress Reduction in the workplace, 2. Conveying managerial concerns and 3. Motivating employees. Hughes and Avey (2009) add weight to this as their research suggests that when a leader uses humour, they elicit a greater commitment from their followers to the organisation and build a much deeper level of trust. Furthermore Holmes and Marraââ¬â¢s (2006) research on humour in the work place identified a wide range of functions including the use of humour as a solidarity strategy, establishing, maintaining and developing workplace relationships and contributing to the process of creating a sense of team through humour as a subversive strategy, contesting, challenging and undermining the achievement of workplace objectives. Humour in the workplace is incredibly profitable for some organisations. According to Stevenson (2004) organisations are starting to see the important role that humour plays towards leadership, motivation, innovation and creativity. Some of these initiatives have been stated by Morreall (1983) and include such organisations as Kodak and Price Waterhouse establishing humour rooms within their buildings. He goes on to add that because humour has such a profound affect on the body, even hospitals are using it to enhance the healing process. You could argue that God, through Solomonââ¬â¢s writings, has always been aware of the powerful impact humour can have; ââ¬Å"A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. â⬠Proverbs 17 v 22 (TNIV 2005). I am currently working as a youth worker for a not for profit organisation. The nature of working in community welfare can be at times be extremely serious, so to counter the seriousness our team have written into our yearly plan to include times of spontaneous dancing in the office. Not that anyone can seem to dance with any real coordination or skill. However itââ¬â¢s exactly the opposite and it allows our team to laugh at and with each other as a way of building morale and combating stress relief. Not all leaders are funny and not all humour is effective. When a leader tries too hard to be funny, it has the potential to undermine their leadership. If the humour is seen as sarcastic or mean spirited, it will certainly alienate staff (Sala 2003). In a list of cautions given by Jonas (2004), who agrees with the idea that humour should be handled like hazardous material, the list of cautions include: Aggressive or put down humour which attacks people or humour based on topics which centre on sex or illegal activity. One would have to include humour which degrades gender and humour which slanders religious beliefs also. Avolio, Howell and Sosik (1999) found that some employee's view the use of humor to be inconsistent with the seriousness of the issues being examined and, depending upon the circumstances, the inappropriate use of humor may have detracted from, rather than contributing to, the eventual outcomes. In some instances, Avolio et al. also believe the use of humour leads employees to view their leaders as insensitive to their needs. When a leader uses humour, there is significant potential for good outcomes. Humour has the ability to go beneath the surface and affect the working environment to such an extent that organisations are seeing the benefit of including ââ¬Ëhumour roomsââ¬â¢ within their organisation. A simple joke about work which is shared among colleagues has the potential to build solidarity and form a bond between colleagues which in turn provides a more positive working environment and greater productivity. While there are some dangers in using humour, however a leader who uses humour wisely can most certainly have an effective and positive impact in their workplace.
