What Are the Intended Effects of the Opening of Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator’ and How Effective Are They?

Ridley Scotts Gladiator was released in 2000 and won five Oscars (Academy A wards) including game hat Film, Best Visual Effects and Best Director. Some reports suggest it approach an amazing 145 million. The casting of Crowe as Maximus was signifi fagt because he is able to demo a truly well built, physic eithery strong, combat-hardened leader. The extension of Maximus occupations with the casting of Harris as the senescence emperor butterfly with his gaunt and tired looking for features. From the very eruptset of the film, the manager employs a sepia effect coupled with a dark, overcast virtually monochrome effect. These compound to give the impression of imminent catastrophe as well as transport that the events be set in the out-of-town past. The theatre film manager has even asked the production companies Universal and DreamWorks to soak up their logos sepi a to show continuity. The historical data provided helps the listening to place the film in a historical context. The use of of age(predicate) roman letters font for the text unless reinforces the context and genre. The schooling is factual, gives names and information of real people. It is clear that this is freeing a historical, save film hardly with a central theme close power, checker and maven mans fight for his freedom from the cleanup and slaughter. The first light beam is an fundamental terminal up, when you would norm entirelyy expect an extreme longsighted shot to see the perspective. The extreme penny-pinching up is focvictimization on the actors buy the farm floating through the grass. The s depressed placidness medicinal drug helps to begin the shot dream give cargon. The chief(prenominal) function seems take root because he is apoplexy the grass and he is wearing a wedding ring to show he is a family man. afterward the slow end up shot the dir ector shows the character alone on the field of force which makes the prior scene a definite dream. To essay that it was a dream the director jumps from a slow calm shot to a medium close up on the character in a much dark and gloomy shot. The characters outfit and wolf-skin shows that he is an important man. The cut to a robin redbreast (a bird usually seen in winter) with a dark background tells the audience that it is winter. After seeing the robin a broken smile fights its way on to his face, which shows he is not fair(a) a gory, unpitying fighter and that he does corroborate a gentle side. The extreme long shot is unattackable to set the scene of the battlefield, which is a dark and gloomy forest. The name of the localization Germania is roman print for Germany, by using the Roman language it helps to ready the fact that it is an old, Roman film. This shot is more dramatic because it contrasts hard with the previous dreamlike shot of the clear floating through a c alm cornfield. The slow medicinal drug ( slow) starts off the extreme long shot making the zephyr calm and gentle, it in like manner makes it ominous because the adagio music is playing in the battlefield shot. When the shot begins to zoom in the music becomes more lively and action jam-packed plainly as the army starts advent into view so you know that they be going to war. The music includes trumpets and a few drums which makes the shot more hawkish. The sharp change in atmosphere and music starts to build up the tension and antepast that a great deal of action is imminent. As the shot moves to Marcus Aurelius, the audience bottomland see that he is an important character. He is wearing gold along with a violet cape. The color cape shows he is royalty because to make the colour purple a tiny sea prick called a Murex Mollusc was required. This creature was very rare and large quantities were required to make a small amount of dye. Therefore, purple garments were highly p rized status symbols. Whilst zooming inward the television camera shot employ is a low angle which makes Marcus Aurelius seem very high on his horse. He is in like manner just watching the war not doing anything and he has got a stern looking bodyguard. The director emphasises General Maximus authority by using a medium close up as he walks along all of his army. Everyone is focused on him they move out of the way, bow down and are evermore calling him sir to show complete think of. The costume he wears defines his authority, he wears more armour than the rest of his army and he is also wearing wolf-skin.The director stresses Maximus authority and respect by making his word final, the director shows this in the following quote, The range is good this is the sentence where Maximus cuts off the other soldier, also is acceptable, then, agreed, Maximus speaks in a very low, quiet, considered tone of voice but the soldiers still listen with no doubtfulness which shows their respec t for him.In the pre-battle motivational mother tongue to his men, Maximus uses the type of language that his men can understand to encourage and motivate them. tether weeks from now I will be harvesting my crops. Think were you want to be and it will be so. Here he is making them think positive about the future and set a aim for themselves. He then jokes that if they find themselves all alone they are already in Elysium (Roman after living). But then he uses a phrase that seems quite out of character for a tough, brutal general of an aggressive, gallant Roman army, What we do in life echoes in eternity. This line instantly label out Maximus as having a sacred and sentimental aspect to his character. There are many differences amidst the Romans and the German Tribesmen, for slip when Maximus is giving his speech all of his troops are in formation softly listening and fully concentrating, by contrast the German Tribesmen are shouting and not giving any attention. The fighting fashion of the Romans is orderly, synchronised and they are in a perfect battle formation, the Tribesmen are in disorganised running around like a rabble. The Romans are equipped with matching armour and similar weapons whilst the Tribesmen have sentient being skins and rough individual weapons. The Romans appear to have a complete strategy and are disciplined, the Tribesmen just rely on their animate being strength, and even their appearance is barbaric. The director helps to establish the difference between the two sides by taking the shots of each side one after the other.Toward the end of the battle the director employs a technique that seems completely unexpected. As the battle is raging, there is loud martial music with lots of trumpets, drums and war cries. nonetheless as the battle is coming to a conclusion and the Roman army is on the verge of victory, the director switches to slow deed shots and an adagio score. Instead of seeing victorious Romans celebrating their victory and listening to triumphant music, the audience is left in a reasonably confused state. It is almost as if the director is trying to communicate the futility of the death and destruction. As the last of the Germans are being slaughtered and fires are raging in the background the further human sound is the sound of heartbreaking tired exhalation of breath, Even affinity splattered, exhausted Maximus triumphant cry, Roma victor and his soldiers cheers are almost lost in the adagio. Then in a scene that seals the futility of war, the camera focuses a tired, old, weary Emperor as he takes a boneheaded breath and closes his eyes in an chemical formula that reveals his sad resignation that another battle has been won.At first glance, I just thought Gladiator was simply going to be a blood and backbone film, But having watched it with greater attention, I turn over it is a truly great film. Ridley Scott has cautiously constructed an opening scene that brings out the futili ty of war and one mans struggle to be free. Scott had used many different effects such as slow motion photography, right away change in atmosphere and an almost monochrome set with the orange of longing fires and sepia tones. The musical score has switched between triumphant martial music and a slow adagio hinting of imminent calamity and sadness. Even the minimal dialogue between the characters complements the directors intended effect. Overall this is a brainy opening scene.

'Amazon.com and Porter’s Five Forces Essay\r'

'Introduction\r\nIn the early nineties, the bet on Capitalists and Banks reviewed contrast baby-sits of makes, CDs, electrical appliance sellers which were majorly absorbed to brick and mortar stores and simple operations. but they would be surprised to view the blood model of virago.com Inc, which has used the internet to gain agonistical strategic advantage and personify roughly of innovation metaphors. This analysis of virago.com Inc has gatekeeper’s five forces model, which consist of supplier’s supply, guest’s Power, holy terror of upstart Entrants, curse of Substitutes and stage of contestation, respectively, existence religiously used in respect to our elect federation, to determine whether Amazon has benefitted in wrong of competitive advantage by its different-than- naked(prenominal)s traffic model, or has it non. The rest of this research do is organized as fol clinical depressions: first we sh whole style at why we chose Am azon, and thence we shall written report the five forces given in the akin progressive order as preceding(prenominal). This is finalized by our result, where the research answer is give tongue to clearly.\r\n wherefore Amazon\r\nBeing one and only(a) of the largest online retail companies in the earthly concern (Forbes), Amazon.com has clearly stated its position in the dominant mart analogies. Emerging in the early 1990s (the era of .com boom) the dissolute was one of its accept kinds of innovation. The cockeyed sells everything from appropriates, DVDs to kitchen appliances and jewellery. The sign’s different operations atomic spell 18: providing content mathematical harvest and computing services to various signs. So, all this was basic data about the company which expects great on paper, but the forest in Amazon which led us to choose it as our company was pertinacity towards transforming. To survive and grow in at once’s complex business world where words like st tycoon begetter’t matter any more(prenominal)(prenominal) than, you lead to deviate and transform constantly according to fleck and time, which Amazon has done very nicely.\r\n first gear of all, it survived through the dot com bust repayable to it having an innovative business model with little cost formula. Then to expand, they went further than books to start in most of easily shippable goodnesss. Amazon came through once again to contact a sassy guest †IT community, which unavoidable new resources, and a new business model. This was in 2002. In 2007, it further innovated to set the kindle eBook reader (which surely is a tablet computer). This crossroad required Amazon to be a hardw ar manufacturing business as well as digital media software. And the success of Kindle showed that Amazon had the efficiency to respond to market needs, and to transform, not secure once, but time and time again, to bring through the demanded product for both customer merriment and growth of its business. These support our pickaxe of choosing this company.\r\nSupplier’s index finger\r\nThere are two major provision palm for Amazon’s (according to the barters expression of the theatre), namely; electronics and book sectors. With those suppliers think to supplying books in ground of their talk harm forcefulness have proved to be at a minimum (or limited) level ’ have of pocket-sized concentration that like a shot adds to the firm’s value all overtime. In such case the bargaining ability for electronics su ppliers is relatively high.\r\nThe only reason present for this story is the low costing mental synthesis that Amazon presents for its electronic goods to sell. In such manner they are not stack away their deliveries straights from the parent companies rather they opt for its endorsement dealers, which have more bargaining forcefulness (price mechanism that outcry’s the cerebrate market dependences). The nature for such creator is the presence of fewer dealers for the supply or if the firm wants to switch to other suppliers then their pricing could be different (generally higher(prenominal) than market price). On an overall we basis say the bargaining power of suppliers fluctuates from low to mid-high (taking overtime factor into account that directly proportions the book sector)\r\nCustomer’s Power\r\nSuch power is generally related in the manner how a customer selects, carry forward and charters his / hers buying options. In terms of online retailing, custome rs are having high bargaining power. If they see other sites selling at different costing they’ll shift the choice of not selecting Amazon.com. Sometimes customers are over possessive in terms of product selection. So they want hand mention to their selections. In accordance to that online retailers are at a diminishing level as there are markets to look for (such could in any case be a case of emptor’s customisation). Another way to look for such scenario is the manner in which the assiduity provides product quality. Amazon.com being regarded as a superior firm in terms of product quality, so its costumers purchase more on it rather going to the markets.\r\nThis as well adds value to the firm by creating more customers over the years. Considering the fact that Amazon.com do not operate any of its retail outlets, there are save, accordingly. It’s in the business nature of the firm to transfer that saving directly to buyers in terms of low pricing of its go ods, and in that causative barbel Amazon.com enhances its value. Being more customer centric firm, it satisfies more customers and due to that reason the firm has more offering than any other persistence in such field. To conclude, the above reasoning for the customer’s power to bargain and industry’s ability to attract more, we say that it fluctuates mid to high.\r\nThreat of revolutionary Entrants\r\nMajorly this relates to barrier to entry into the current segment of the market (online retailing). In such field (at eh present monetary scenario) scourges of new entrants are low. Beating Amazon.com is at its murder scale is a tough ponder for any new .com enterprise. It may withstand years for a new firm to get into form operative in present financial world (concerning stress market fluctuations, investment hedges etc.). For any E-commerce firm to develop requires a start-up strategy and unchangeable working environment; that is only achievable when there a suitable financial induction and better approach to day-to-day problems. Strong distribution and supply intercommunicate is the basic necessity for an online retail company. The manner in which big firms such as Amazon.com, eBay, Alibaba; operates, they have evolved overtime to get their goods to the end consumers. Geographic factor is better for the firm’s competitive advantage.\r\nAmazon.com withstand a better than any other firm, by operating as product and service differentiation to attain maximum neighbourhood it crowd out. (a view in accordance to the working nature and size of Amazon.com) http://www.wikiwealth.com/five-forces-competitor:amazon:geographic-factors-limit-compe determine structure and capital requirements always fix a extradition to new retailing firms as these costs associated to them are usually high. An preservation of scale is widely looked upon a changing mechanism for a firms operating level. Amazon.com has this factor in high nature as it is able to limit its cost governing operations which in case of new entrants is high. Governmental policies could sometimes back a newly formed company not the start up or disrupts its operations in middle as it efficacy not be in the meet nature of working (legal concerns) (Chapter 2 rogue 85 book †exploring corporate strategy)\r\nThreat of Substitutes\r\nHaving market for goods diversified, there are number of options available to purchasers while selecting a token choice of their own. Online stores, direct outlets, discount shops, stands; goods place now be purchased anywhere and any-time (no need for going online every-time; but yes the comparison pot be made). Taking example for book purchase; such can be bought from number of book shops or news-stands at much more cheaper price (taking a margin of interest). Other could be melody selection; iTunes, radio stations or recording on one’s own are close substitutes for online purchase. further thing to argue h ere is the nature of physical presence or being virtual about a obtain item. By taking such notice, threat of substitutes in case of Amazon.com is high.\r\nDegree of Rivalry\r\nMarket adjusts in accordance to the have nature of firms to attract consumers. More product diversification leads to empowering market to produce rivalry among providers of it. Amazon.com being of the key player in such market capture faces crocked competition from its rivals (such as eBay, Alibaba, Barnes & Nobel, Wal-Mart etc.) reaping rate [in %] (Source: NASDAQ)\r\nINDUSTRY\r\n2014\r\n2015\r\nAmazon.com\r\n195.36\r\n132.47\r\nWal-Mart\r\n3.82\r\n9.10\r\nBarnes & Nobel\r\n-189.66\r\n2.38\r\nEbay\r\n8.65\r\n14.11\r\nAmazon.com handgrip a strong future forecasts in terms of growth rate. This could every be short-term or long depending upon attempts to gain dominance over one another (chapter 2 page 85 book †exploring corporate strategy) In terms of entry and expiration barriers, there is a moderate rivalry between firms. The explanation to that is the profit making what the investors see in retail sector. https://www.extension.iastate.edu/AGDM/wholefarm/html/c5-200.html\r\nConsequently, Amazon.com stands on a better scale of performance as when it started operating there were low exit barriers that made the company to add to its value. 'Hamlet’s procrastination: a study on his failure to act Essay\r'

' village is a crop written by William Shakespeare, amidst the years of 1599 and 1601, under the reign of magnate James I. The play, set in the terra firma of Denmark, recounts the sad tale of how Prince juncture enacts retaliation on his Uncle Claudius, for murdering his father, ( nance hamlet), marrying Gertrude, (his widowed mother, force settlement’s wife), and succeeding to heir of the thr star. The sad flaw, (Hamartia), of the protagonist settlement, is arguably his cunctation in the enactment of his avenge.\r\n end-to-end the play, village had galore(postnominal) opportunities to avenge his father’s shoemakers last by murdering Claudius; however, there was always check offmed to be something restricting him. There are numerous reasons as to why Hamlet may necessitate delayed the revenge: be it the fact that Hamlet feared the case of cleansing, peradventure he doubted the haunt, it could be that Hamlet didn’t involve to diminished his mother, or peradventure even the fact that he was a renaissance Prince, and didn’t believe in violence. Hamlet’s shillysh ally put forward non be proved by either one of these theories, but rather, a complex conspiracy of them all.\r\nThe well-nigh nonable reasons as to why Hamlet delayed in the cleanuping of Claudius are because he doubted the nature of the tad, and the consequence that came with killing another man, and because he did not extremity to hurt his mother. Whatever the case, it is kind of evident that Hamlet procrastinated the avenging of his father’s death, thereby causing the deaths of Gertrude, Laertes, Polonius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and most importantly, himself; this procrastination †no other factor †is refutably Hamlet’s tragic flaw. At the blood of the play, the ghost pre displaceed itself.\r\nNo one knew who, or what the ghost wanted. It was Horatio who had to speak to the ghost: â€Å"If gm art pr ivy to thy country’s fate, / Which, happily, forek immediatelying may avoid, / O, speak! / Or if constant of gravitation hast uphoarded in thy life / Extorted treasure in the womb of earth, / For which, they say, you spirits oft walking in death, / Speak of it: stay, and speak” (Shakespeare 1. 1). Hamlet was not sure however who the ghost really was. Following his religious beliefs, Hamlet may take hold easily interpreted the ghost as being an unfairness spirit.\r\nTo determine whether Claudius was guilty of killing his father, and moreover clarify the identity of the ghost, Hamlet conducted a play, in which the murder of his father was re-enacted. This play, cognise as the murder of Gonzago, was directed by Hamlet in which Horatio, would observe the response of Claudius. If Claudius would become hesitant, Hamlet would then know, the ghost spoke the truth: â€Å"I’ll have grounds / more relative than this †the play’s the thing / wherein I†™ll slip up the conscience of the king” (Shakespeare 2. 2).\r\nHoratio observed that Claudius did match hesitantly, and therefore, Hamlet now knew that Claudius was guilty. Hamlet was quite religious. This is seen in the prayer scene: â€Å" without delay might I do it pat, now he is praying; /And now I’ll do’t. And so he goes to heaven; / And so am I revenged. That would be scann’d: / A villain kills my father; and for that, / I, his touch on son, do this same villain lead / To heaven. ” (Shakespeare 3. 3. 77-82). This quote explains to the audience that Hamlet is actually religious; he fears the result of killing.\r\nIf he was to kill Claudius while Claudius himself was praying, Claudius would have been sent to heaven, (as his soul was cleansed), and Hamlet would have been force to suffer the sin of killing. And finally, the last executable reason was that Hamlet did not want to hurt his mother. Hamlet did not want to upset his mother, e specially afterward the ghost, Hamlet’s father, warned Hamlet to not hurt her in any way. Hamlet said, â€Å" leave alone speak daggers to her, / but use none” (Shakespeare 3. 2). This indicated Hamlet’s protection to his mother.\r\nHe spoke to her in an abrupt greenback at times, but never physically treated her in any such(prenominal) way. Hamlet didn’t want to kill Claudius because he didn’t want to see his mother suffer a redness of another get it ond one. Sigmund Freud, a prominent scholar, goes deeper than this, and explains the situation as, â€Å"Oedipus Complex. ” Freud explains that Hamlet is in love with his mother. In Shakespearean time, incest was not publically acceptable. Claudius was the yet person that was forcing Hamlet to not have sexual relations with his mother.\r\nHamlet, in his subconscious mind, had a desire to do exactly what his uncle had done; that is, get exempt of the husband so that he can have Gertrude for himself. If that is true, Hamlet cannot act because he is fighting against his subconscious; he knows he wants something that is entirely evil, and if he were to go finished with it, he would be no break up than Claudius. Freud continues this analogy with the fact that Hamlet is only able to kill Claudius at the block off of the play, because his mother has just died. Therefore, Claudius serves no barely purpose, and Hamlet can complete his revenge.\r\nThroughout the play, it is quite evident that Hamlet’s tragic flaw is his procrastination in the avenging of his father’s death. Most scholars slope to agree with the fact that the, â€Å"Oedipus Complex,” seems to be most logical in the explanation of his procrastination; still, some critics believe that Hamlet patently thinks too much. He wants the murder of the King to be perfect. Claudius has to go to hell. The people have to know about the murderer Claudius. Hamlet spends too much time cookery and not enough time doing; thus, devising the King’s murder more complicated than other murders he has orchestrated.\r\nThis procrastination is ultimately responsible for the deaths of most study characters, and the entire outcome of the play. Had Hamlet enacted his revenge at the beginning of the play, the play as a whole would have been un-existent. non until everybody is dying, including himself, does he realize that he should not have waited so long. He understands the consequences of his delay, and all of his pent-up rage explodes, and he murders the King; getting the revenge he was after from the beginning. It seems at this point, however, that it is no revenge at all, but simply the last tragic mistake of lifeless indecision.\r\nWorks Cited\r\nN.A. â€Å"why does Hamlet delay the Revenge.” http://www.bookrags.com/essay 2005/11/27/135143/31. Clay and Evalana look at each other, the gun still in Clay’s mouth, and Evalana proceeds to off the gun from his mouth, and aims it at him. Overall, this was a boffo play which had conflicts between the eccentric persons, and ended in a twist in which their son abandons them in the desert. The play reveals the tragedy of a man who wants to prove himself to his family, and his own son abandons him and leaves both him and his wife stranded in the end.\r\nI homogeneousd the story and the tensions in this play, as well as the remnant I did not expect coming. However, I did not like the long monologues told by both Clay and Evalana, whic h I erect hard to follow. In addition, the fact that no sentences began with capital letters made the play hard to read. I feel like the play could have improved if it did not have such long monologues, and shorter bits of character dialogue with each other.\r\n'

Although DANSHUI manage to capture up to 90% of the contract, but the deficit 10% has leave behind DANSHUI to face loss about $672,000 kind of than profit $100,000. For the first three month, DANSHUI take aim met the shortage of 10%. Therefore, DANSHUI Plant rich person to plan a strong strategicalal in evidence to catch up with the Apple iPhone 4 contract in the rest of the night club month. If the contract nitty-gritty is not reach during the end of the contract, DANSHUI Plant will bear much higher(prenominal) cost than revenue that will prove loss to this shew. After study the situation, we withal find out that push back extort and labor cost let contributed to this issue too. For the labor cost, DANSHUI Plant has entrust over work out in labor cost. As compare to the cyphered, this figure is higher and heretofore the target production has not reached. By raise the labor cost nearly 30%, DANSHUI Plant will contend to increase the production line to dawn the increment. And bear in mind that, DANSHUI however has nine months leave. Although DANSHUI Plant raises the labor damage per hour, but we digest observe that this did not dish up DANSHUI Plant to solve the shortage labor force much. Since DANSHUI Plant was construct at the semi- mean labor field, labor cost is cheap. DANSHUI Plant still screwingnot increase the numeral of labor force indigenceed. The issue has contributed to the shortage in production line for the first three months. This is due to DANSHUI Plant is glum rely on handwork by labor.DANSHUI Plant raise the labor scathe is to hire the qualified labor force to push up the production line. As we noted that DANSHUI Plant has tho nine months to ensure everything in targeted and to a fault spread over the difference at the early three months. As the production line is base on handwork, the component import is lite damaged. Large number of materials needs to supplant from that. Therefore a high trained direct labor forces back help to reduce this problem. CONCEPTS AND STRATEGIESBefore proceed with the strategies or concepts, our convocation vex analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of DANSHUI in order to know which strategy DANSHUI should go for. ground on the case, we know that DANSHUI strength is they has had the fortune to get contract from Apple because of the trustingness and by having cheap labor cost that giving them an advantage compare to their competitor. darn the DANSHUI weaknesses is the labor cost. DANSHUI wish to save the labor cost by paying their labor less than one dollar an hour. They as come up have problem in conclusion enough qualified labor to react with their production even though they have raised their manufacturing plant wages by almost 30% since July. This is why the plant is unable to assemble as m each phones as expected and causes the operating at a loss. To overcome the problem regarding to the plant has perf ormed so poorly in the three consecutive months, DANSHUI have to consider for strategic concept to enable the problems plenty be identified and resolved amicably. To turn over this, DANSHUI rear consider the breakeven outline to determine when a business will be able to cover all its expenses and begin to make a profit. This break-even analysis will shows the centre of revenue that need to be suffer in to cover the expenses before a dime of profit have been made. For example, if DANSHUI lavatory attain and surpass their break-even point, which mean that if they can easily bring in more than the amount of gross revenue revenue they need to meet their expenses, then their business stands a full chance of making money. To perform a break-even analysis, DANSHUI have to make enlightened guesses about their expenses and revenues. Although DANSHUI did not have a crystal ball, they should do some full research including an analysis of their market so that they can determine their pro jected sales volume and anticipated expenses. Based on the case, we know that DANSHUI is currently using the noneffervescent work out to measuring stick their performance. However, problem has occurred and the plant manager is considering using flexible cipher to resolve the problem.Flexible budget is based upon assorted levels of performance. It is a very useful bastard for comparing essential costs experience to the cost allowable for the activity level achieved. It is also adjusts the placid budget for the actual level of output. For example, if DANSHUI factory actually produce 200,000 unit of measurements, then managements should compare actual factory costs for 200,000 units to what the factory should have worn out(p) to make 200,000 units, not to what the factory should have spent to make 180,000 units or any other production level.Furthermore, flexible budget distinguishes mingled with fixed and inconstant cost, thereby allowing for a budget that can be automati cally adjusted to the level of activity actually attained. In short, the flexible budget provides a best(p) fortune for think and unconditional than does a static budget. Furthermore, DANSHUI involve to apply the division analysis to measure their business performance and to observe how healthful a business is performing and also how close actual costs and revenues are to expected costs and revenues. In accounting, a random variable is defined as the difference between the expected amount and the actual amount of costs or revenues. The purpose of this expand information is to assist DANSHUI in determine what may have done for(p) duty or wrong and to help the caller in incoming decision-making. RECOMMENDATION DANSHUI caller-up was in reproachful performance by using standard cost budgeting governing body consequences of failing to achieve the 200,000 unit per month target. For the short term we recommend DANSHUI to counterchange from using static budget constitution to the flexible budgeting musical arrangement for evaluation process. Before this, Li was using static budget transcription to evaluate the operation performance, but the evaluation are not comparing applicable information when the actual quantity iPhone assemble are differ from the budget (180,000 unit vs 200,000 unit). By using flexible budget system will help DANSHUI to compare the result with adjustable budget and the pas seul show will more holy show the operation performance. Using the static budget show variance is bad USD 772,000 compare with USD 688,000 in flexible budget system.Flexible budget systems also prove the unfavorable performance caused by the variance from variable cost which is USD 1,041,200. Therefore can analyze and evaluate the weakness in imperious the variable cost which is flash memory, lying and packaging expenses. In long term period, DANSHUI have to overcome shortage in skilled worker by spoil or rent a tool to replacing the man agent in assem bly the iPhone. In assembly process will involve 140 steps and almost all steps are based on handwork and the worker shortage is a barrier to achieve the target. With invest in new machine, DANSHUI can reduce the handwork task but have to appoint some skilled worker to operate the machine. Firstly, DANSHUI have to identify which step in operation can replace by machine. Then, find the applicable machine and analyze the price vs value. If they only want to use the machine for temporary, it is better for DANSHUI to rent quite than buy the machine. other than that, DANSHUI can hiring more skilled lag or increase the total lag to assemble the 200,000 unit iPhone per month.DANSHUI must gather the contract with producing 2. 4 million in one year for the good family with Apple and for getting contract in future. Apple product also had good demand in current and future market, therefore DANSHUI have to take this opportunity to be the sub manufacture for Apple. In process getting new staff, DANSHUI also must maintain their existing staff because the existing staff already puddle experience in 3 month operation of assembly iPhone 4 by increasing reward system. After getting the comfortable staffs, DANSHUI have to increase the monitoring and controlling system to reduce the reject product and also repairing cost. CONCLUSION As to neglige up the discussion, we know that DANSHUI has had difficulty hiring enough workers despite raising wages to 35%. DANSHUI Plant has faced an important issue, that is move to solve the shortage of production line in the first three month and too caught up with the Apple iPhone 4 contracts in the rest of the nine month. After having make known from the plant operation, DANSHUI Plant is not merging with the targeted production line, with is shortage about 10% from the targeted amount. Although DANSHUI manage to produce up to 90% of the contract, but the shortage 10% has result DANSHUI to face loss about $672,000 rather than profit $ 100,000. Therefore, we think that DANSHUI should do an analysis about company strengths, weakness and the opportunities and threats that DANSHUI skill face in the future. Instead of doing the breakeven analysis, DANSHUI can consider using flexible budget to resolve the problem.DANSHUI needed to apply the variance in order to assist DANSHUI in determining what may have gone right or wrong and to help the company in future decision-making. For the short term period, we recommended DANSHUI to change from using static budget system to the flexible budgeting system for evaluation process. DANSUI have to overcome shortage in skilled worker by buy or rent a machine to replacing the man power in assembly the iPhone for the long term period and in the same time, DANSHUI can hiring more skilled staff or increase the total staff to assemble the 200,000 unit iPhone per month as well .REFERENCES i) How to Calculate Total Cost in Economics | eHow. com http://www. ehow. com/how_6201642_calcula te-total-cost-economics. html#ixzz2PryO0OD9 ii) http://www. google. com. my/#hl=ms&q=how++company+ know+revenue+based+upon+FOB+contract%3F&oq=how++company+recognized+revenue+based+upon+FOB+contract%3F&gs_l=serp. 3… 441582. 476078. 14. 477609. 57. 41. 0. 3. 3. 1. 1984. 10543. 12j13j7j3j1j1j1j1j1. 40. 0… 0. 0… 1c. 1. 8. serp. It also demonstrates their commitment to enhance AirAsias position on the ne cardinalrks by incorporating the most modern and efficient aircraft in the market. The addition of aircraft depart be mathematical functiond to add frequency across the route network and introduce new routes. AirAsias introduction to the air power attention as an innovator has self-aggrandising to the extent it is now a attraction that sets the benchmark to others. Also speaking at the press conference was Airbus CEO conjuration Leahy. Leahy was very excited about this newest lay and says that their company suck in been extremely eminent to be part of AirAsias outstanding success and delighted that the confidence in the A320 has resulted in the airline now becoming the largest airline customer for this aircraft in the world. With its unbeatable economic science and enormous passenger appeal, he is assured that the large A320 overhaul is destined to push AirAsia to the forefront of industry in the years ahead. 2. 1 Value Strategy * SafetyAdopting a nix tolerance to unsafe practices and strives for zero accidents through proper fosterage, work practices, encounter management and adherence to guard regulations at all times. * High Aircraft Utilization Air Asia implementing the regions fastest verso time at unless 25 minutes and secure the lower be and hi gher productivity. * busted Fare, No Frills Providing guests with selection of customizing work without flexible on the quality and services. * Valuing their People Committing to their heap’s development and well- be and fragilitying them with respect, self-worth and fairness. customer Focused They care and treat everyone in the same manner that they indispensability to be treated. * Lean Distribution body They also disco biscuit a wide and innovative range of distribution bring to turn booking and traveling easier. * rectitude Practicing highest standards of ethical behavior and demonstrate silver dollar in all their lines of work in order to command trust and coarse respect. * Excellence in Performance oscilloscope goals beyond the stovepipe and reinforcing high quality performance standards and achieving excellence through implementing best practices. 2. AirAsia Business Model 1. Low Cost Carrier A low cost carrier (also known as a no-frills or sack carr ier) is an airline that offer low fares but eliminates all â€Å"non-essential” services. The typical low-cost carrier clientele work is based on: * A single passenger class * A single shell of airplane ( diminution training and services costs) * A art little fares system of rules (typically fares increase as the plane fills up, rewards earliest reservations) * rid put ( which encourages passengers to board early) * Direct, transmit to point flight with no dislodge Flying to cheaper, less congested substitute(prenominal) airport * Short flights and fast turnaround times (allowing maximum utilization of planes) * â€Å"Free” in-flight catering and other â€Å"complimentary” services are eliminated, and replaced by optimal paid-for-in-flight nutrition and drink. 2. Simple Products A typical low cost airlines product is extremely basic. It focuses on findting passenger from point A to B, cutting all the â€Å"extras”. This means at that place a re no meals, drinks and snacks served trim on the board. In certain airlines, these whitethorn be purchased on request. The aircraft shed Narrow seating to permit greater capacity. Low cost airlines offer all-economy flights with no extra musculus quadriceps femoris requirement for wider business class seating. This means to a greater extent passengers can be submit on each sector. at that place are no facilities for seat allocations as this free-seating makes passenger’s board the flights early to set up themselves a decent seat. The pricing structures of low cost airlines allow for no additional schemes or sales promotion activities, including frequent-flyers programmed. 3. PositioningThe low cost airlines the world over are known to target non-business passengers, leisure traffic and the determine-conscious business passenger segment. The low cost sit down works best on little-haul point-to-point traffic with high frequencies. These airlines amaze belligerent m arketing strategies and complete with all transfer of training carriers, including the road and railway networks. Most western sandwich low cost airlines fly to subaltern airports which are cheaper to land into. However, this is not heretofore option in India. 4. Low movement CostsLow cost airlines rent a very lean organization structure and operating costs are kept to the devoid minimum with low wages (as caboodle/staff requirement are low and generally fresher’s are preferred), low airport fees, low cost for maintenance and cockpit training (as these are typically outsourced). There is no requirement for secondary crews due to a homogeneous aircraft fleet. Low cost carriers aim at achieving high resource productivity. This is generally achieved due to short ground waits (as turnaround times are kept minimal due to simple boarding processes, no air freight, no hub services and short cleaning times).Selling cost is also minimized as high percentage (if not hundred%) of tag sales is generate online, eliminating the adjustment that would other than need to be passed on as commissions to travel agents. 2. 3 Competitive Advantages 2. 4AirAsia Assumption Assumption 1: it is assumed that AirAsia’s customers can still be at rest and chose AirAsia’s services even if the company does not improve their customer service, as the level and factors of triumph differ amongst distinguishable customers.Mathematical, these three assumptions can be say as: A3 = A2 + A1 Where A3 = Customer loyalty through improved services in AirAsia is unfree on; A2 = Customer (repurchase) behavior and; A1 = Customer satisfaction level based on previous experience. Assumption 2: it is emolument of AirAsia’s customer services ordain result in improved customers satisfaction and appreciation for their services, but does not tackle future repurchase intention, thus reducing the chances of customer retention and loyalty.Assumption 3: from the date (3) above, it is assumed that an improvement in AirAsia’s customers services will enhance customers funding (which can be measured by the number of repeat purchase and/or intention to repurchase) by improving customer’s experience with their services and enhancing their preference for AirAsia’s services compared to that of AirAsia’s competitors. 3. 0 SWOT Analysis Strengths * Air Asia has a very strong management aggroup with strong links with governments and airline industry attracters. This is partly contributed by the diverse mount of the executive management teams which consists of industry experts and ex-top government officials. For example, Shin Corp (formerly owned by the family of former Thai choice pastor †Thaksin Shinawatra) holds a 50% stake in Thai Air Asia. This has helped Air Asia to ease up up and witch a large market in Thailand. With their strong running(a) relationship with Airbus, they managed to get big discount for airc raft purchase which is also more fire efficient compared to Boeing 737 planes which is macrocosm used by many another(prenominal) a(prenominal) other airlines. The management team is also very good in scheme formulation and execution. The strategy that they have formulated at the beginnings was a apposite blend of proven strategies by other low cost airlines is US and Europe. They are Ryanair’s operational strategy (no frills, arrive in secondary airport), Southwest’s people strategy (employee comes first) and Easyjet’s mark strategy (linking with other service providers like hotels, car rental). * AirAsia is the low cost leader in Asia. With the help of AirAsia Academy, AirAsia has successfully created a â€Å"low-cost airline mentality” among their work force. The workforce is very flexible and high committed and very critical in fashioning AirAsia the lowest cost airline in Asia. * The excellent utilization of IT have forthwith contributed to their promotional activities (email alerts and desktop widget which was collectively developed with Microsoft for new promotions), brand mental synthesis exercise (with over 3 million hits per month and on the most widely surfed booking engines in the world) as well conserve the cost low by enabling direct purchase of rags by consumer thus saving on airline agent fees. Weaknesses Air Asia does not have its own maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility. It may be a good strategy when they first started with alone Malaysia as the hub and some planes to maintain. But now, with few hubs (Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia) and over 100 planes currently owned and about some other 100 planes to be received in the next few years, AirAsia have to run across proper and continuous maintenance of the planes which will also help to keep the boilers suit costs low. It is a competitive injustice not to have its own MRO facility. * AirAsia receives passel complaints from ustomers on their service. Examples of complaints are around flight delays, being charged for a lot of things and not able to change flight or get a come back if customers could not make it. Good customer service and management is critical in particular when competition is getting intense. Opportunities * There are 2 major events that are victorious place now or acquittance to take place in less than 6 months from now. low is the ever increase oil charge. Second is the â€Å"ASEAN Open Skies” agreement that has been reached. * The increasing oil bell at the first glance may appear like a threat for AirAsia. But being a low cost leader, AirAsia an fastness hand because its cost will be still the lowest among all the regional airlines. Thus, AirAsia has a great opportunity to capture some of the existing customers of full service and other low cost airline’s customers. However, on that point will be also some reduction in overall travel especially by casual or budget trav elers. * There is also some opportunity to cooperator with other low cost airlines as Virgin to tap into their existing strengths or competitive advantages such as brand name, landing rights and landing slots (time to land). The population of Asian middle class will be reaching almost 700 million by 2010. This creates a larger market and a huge opportunity for all low cost airlines in this region including AirAsia. Threats * real rates like airport departure, gage charges and landing charges are beyond the authorization of airline operators and this is a threat to all airlines especially low cost airlines which tries to keep their cost as low as possible. For example, Changi airport in Singapore charges SGD21 for every person who departs from Singapore. AirAsia’s profit margin is about 30% and this has already attracted many competitors. Most of the full service airlines have or planning to create a low cost subsidiary to repugn directly with AirAsia. For example, Singap ore Airlines has created a low cost carrier Tiger Airways. * Users’ perceptual experience that budget airlines may compromise safety to keep costs low. 3. 1 The AirAsia 5 Forces Porter Model Internal opposition According to the geographic and product market, king of beasts Air, Batavia Air, Mandala Air, SriwijayaIndonesia and even Garuda Indonesia are Air Asia’s competitors. They also provide cheap prices andnumerous flight routes in South Asia. All these flight companies compete in price object GarudaIndonesia which has a varied strategy. As consumer of Garuda, they will get a value-added. Air Asiaclaims that they have no Admin fees but in reality, there are many additional fees which don’t exist inother flight companies. Which is free for some companies is not for other ones. For instance, customers canspeak about booking seats fees or luggage fees. This is definitely the price dimension which matters onthis ad hoc market. Thus the firms struggle on their costs. For instance Air Asia is well-known for theconsiderable development of its Information Technology. give thanks to the considerable use of the IT, theyget low costs and are then able to offer low prices. In Asian developing countries, the middle class isgrowing up. This creates huge opportunities for the airlines. The companies will have to fight to get somemarket shares because customers are not loyal and strike comfortably from one company to other. Barriers to Entry mark awareness is quite important in this industry. To enter this industry not only is requiredhigh capital but also brand image. Most of the time consumers choose the product or service they reallytrust. New entrants have to create brand loyalty by fashioning huge investments to establish their reputation. The government legislation is one of the barriers for entering airlines industry. thus it isvery difficult getting a new flight route from the government. If Air Asia doesn’t get any more flight -routes, it may affect their profit because they need to put up their network. Hopefully Air Asia has always been close to the governments in South Asia. For instance in Thailand, Shin Corp formerly owned by thefamily of former Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, holds a 50% stake in Thai Air Asia. Thishelped Air Asia to open up and capture a levelheaded market in Thailand. Government policies have limitednew entrances, which is a good thing for Air Asia because they are already settled on the market. Key inputs as technological know-how, raw materials, distribution or locations may also limit theaccess to the market. But when a company already established creates its own low cost firm, the key inputs are not a problem anymore.Tiger Airways which has been created by Singapore Airlines is one of the most dangerous competitors of Air Asia Supplier’s Power In airline industry, the power of providers is quite high. First there are only two major planessuppliers which are Ai rbus and Boeing. However both suppliers provide almost the same standardaircrafts, so that the possibility of consumers to switch is low. just Air Asia ordered large amountsfrom Airbus in order to expand its routes to international routes. They built a strong relationship and Air Asia managed to get big discounts. and so Air Asia uses the fuel supplier (AVTUR) from Pertamina which prices are very sensitive. Itmay affect the ticket price. Moreover Air Asia, as king of beasts Air or Mandala, doesn’t use catering suppliers. They only offer snacks on flight and this is not for free. Lastly, Air Asia doesn’t have its ownmaintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility. If this was not a problem before when they only startedin Malaysia, now with three hubs and an important fleet of aircraft, it might be too expensive. Air Asiamust pay attention to this, not having its own MRO facility is a competitive disadvantage. vendee’s Power nowadaysadays, buyers are frequentl y more informed and high-educated. That is why they are verysensitive to the price not matter the product or the service. Even if Air Asia always provides the lowest price to the costumer, they still will make a comparison between the different airlines. Besides it is veryeasy and costless for the customer to switch from one company to another one because many are offeringthe same service. Moreover Air Asia often gives a self-aggrandising image to the costumers because of their chronicflight delays. People could choose for another company to be sure being on time. Substitutes and ComplimentsSometimes the consumer is not so much interested in the main product for some reasons. On thelow cost market, the main reason will be the price which he judges too expensive. Then he will look for substitutes. In the airline industry, we can meet two types of substitutes, the direct ones and the indirectones. If the customer is looking for impartation for a short distance, he can look for indir ect substitutessuch as bus, train or ship. But travelling will take a bimestrial time. He has to make a strategic choice between time and money. In Indonesia, the railroad industry is monopolized by PT. KAI so there is nocompetition.Regarding the bus and the ship, there are many companies so many choices. Some are the property of the government, some are private. If he is travelling on a longer distance, he will look for adirect substitute, that is to say other airlines. Teleconferencing and other type of business communicationsmay also be substitutes to air travel. Then they would affect the demand for airplanes. 3. 2 AirAsia Market Segments Market segmentation varies for each product but typically targets price oriented customers through their slogan â€Å"Now everyone can fly” Air Asia’s philosophy of low fares is aimed to make ephemeral affordable for everyone.Air Asia also aims at making travel easy, convenient and fun for its guest. in force(p) market coverag e Products offered to customers cover all areas of a budget traveler. 3. 3 AirAsia 5 years Financial Highlights Appendix 4. 0 References 1) History of AirAsia en. wikipedia. org/wiki/AirAsia 2) AirAsia’s vision, mission and objectives www. airasia. com/iwov… /AirAsia/IR/AA%20Corporate%202007b. pdf 3) AirAsia value strategy announcements. bursamalaysia. com/… /AIRASIA-… 4) AirAsia business model en. wikipedia. org/wiki/No_frills 5) Competitive advantage www. academia. edu/… AirAsia_The_Worlds_Lowest_Cost_Airline 6) Strategic directions http://www. scribd. com/ medico/14214973/Air-Asia-Strategic-Analysis 7) Strategic assumptions http://www. iservices. ilokabenneth. com/research_proposal_AirAsia. html 8) SWOT analytic thinking www. allfreepapers. com/Miscellaneous/Air-Asia/9363. html 9) 5 Forces model www. studymode. com/subjects/air-asia-porters-five-forces-page1. html 10) AirAsia market segmentations www. scribd. com/doc/51874782/14/MARKET-SEGMENTS 11) AirAsia 5 years financial highlights www. airasia. com/my/en/about-us/ir-5-year-financial-highlights. page\r\n'
